Samsung Galaxy Pocket

using it as my secondary phone since my primary LUMIA 800 is in for repairs ... Can be really slow, but never hanged, has Andriod and most of the apps... Camera not too bad but no flash, screen too tiny for texting, but, for its price, its doing pretty well ... Am not sure if this is samsung feature but phone locks immediately after accepting a call and screen goes blank. This makes it difficult to drop a call ... and sometimes a call will be running in the background if the caller didn't drop it.

thank you, much appreciated.

Not a very good phone, but as the saying goes - you get what you pay for.

Not bad for the price. Screen is tooooo small for texting though.

I love it.

I'm one of those oldtimers that still believe the main purpose of a phone is to make and receive calls.

Reason 1 - size:
It's small. Fits in my jeans pocket without my having to adjust it every time I want to sit or crouch (and people no longer wonder what the hack I'm doing while I'm at it).
Reason 2 - battery life:
I use the phone to phone, SMS and read my e-mail. Had both S3 and Xperia Go (with JB and ICS), and the battery would barely make it to the end of the day. With Galaxy Pocket, the battery lasts 3 days solid (with data on GSM, Wi-Fi always on and Gmail sync).
Reason 3 - price:
With a phone that costs R850 brand new, there is little fear of dropping it or scratching the screen. This phone is cheaper than an extended battery cover for S3!
Reason 4 - the vibration:
In an open-plan office environment like mine, a ringing phone is everyone's irritation. Both S3 and Xperia Go vibrations are in my opinion too subtle - it made me miss countless calls. When Galaxy Pocket vibrates, it makes me jump off my chair.

Texting was initially a challenge, but then installed SlideIT keyboard, which somehow works out what I'm trying to say nearly every time.

I have a galaxy pocket. The screen is small to write long emails on, it is a bit slow at times too.

Not a bad phone, but if you can afford better - get something like the Sony Experia Go (they are like R149 p/m on contract from MTN now)

Got one for my wife after her S2 was stolen.
She loves the small size, claims it is easy to use.
She also realizes it is only a stop-gap phone however until we upgrade in a few months again.

had this phone for a while now, great little android phone,

No BBM support yet for it yet......
always wondering what upgrades can be done on it, sure with a bit of tweaking some of those annoyances can be fixed up.
saw a few threads on XDA developer custom ROMS for it, ICS upgrade on it,

sure if you take some annoyances off it like the screen auto locking and all the nonsense Adds that pop up on it it can be a great phone for half the money of a S4 mini or note 3.

I see you can get this from MTN with a 32" Samsung LCD for like 229/month or something.

Just how small is this 3" screen? People saying it's too small for texting?

It's bearable (tried it out for a few mins when I was looking at a spare phone when my Sony was in for repairs). Best option would be to change the Samsung keyboard to the Google keyboard (search for it on XDA - Not available on SA Play Store)

Or swiftkey?

Could be an option... I personally like the Google keyboard because the keys are huge and its really nice to type on. Compared to the stock Sony, Samsung, LG and HTC keyboards I've used, its much nicer. I barely make any errors using it on my Note 2 and I hated the stock keyboard as the keys were too small. It was easier to type on an iPhone than on my Note 2 as the keys were small

You could spend a little more and get a 3,5" Huawei Y220/300 from Edgars depending on your budget of course.

quite small but manageable for texting nonetheless, slow definitely especially with a few apps on it,
takes +- 10 seconds sometimes to display app drawer with all apps.

its fine if your budget is limited and you want a samsung android phone and not some Chinese no name brand.

Wow, that does sound slow :/

well I have a 8 GB SD card in mine and yes takes a while, still trying to figure out if its due to mine having Cr*p
vodacom software on it, even though I use MTN. should see how long it takes to start up from being switched off :-D

one of these days will root it and uninstall all the nonsense it has on it.
any ideas?

To be used as a phone nothing more. Too slow for apps even typing an sms is a nightmare unless you have really small hands like hj2k
