Samsung Galaxy S4 blitz may force Apple's hand

Well it's no surprise that Samsung is going like a rocket compared to Apple since more than half their energy does not go into promoting their own little software and hardware ecosystem.

It comes as very little surprise to me that Apple's philosophy is losing them fans when you see the alternatives that are available out there now - Like the S4. I mean come now really... Did they think it would last?

Those comparisons are one sided.
The title is "Samsung Galaxy vs. iPhone Sales by Model" but it very conveniently omits the Galaxy Y, Galaxy Grand, Galaxy Ace, Galaxy Chat, etc. devices from Samsung.

Huh? They are comparing only the high end models...

In that chart Samsung has 5 Galaxy (S1, S2, S3, Note 1 and 2) models as opposed to 3 iPhone models and yet it is a landslide in favour of the iPhone.

I keep reading about the fall of the iPhone and the rise of [include Android OEM here] but it never materialises.

iPhone S models have always been runaway successes. I bet this graph will skew even more in Apple's favour by year end.

Lol. It doesn't concern you that one OEM (Apple with only 3 devices) has nearly a quarter of the market share?

That Android 71% is divided by 100 OEM's and a further 100 devices.

Diversity and choice is fantastic and it's the greatest achievement of Android. Comparing 1 model against 100 (actually the number is far higher) to say that the 100 are winning is an absurdity though.
 
Is it really that important for Apple to sell more devices than Samsung? If they make a bigger margin on the ones they do sell, the shareholders should be happy. Mere size is irrelevant.
What may be an issue is that size will erode the hardware ecosystem - there are thousands of sleek iPhone/iPod docking stations available from every manufacturer under the sun. Nothing close for Samsung. The first devices are only coming on the market now and they are "dual docking," meaning for i's and Galaxy's.

It's also absurd to compare products from 2 companies, one of which has only been selling the type of for half the time that the other has (touch smart phones).

The whole Samsung - Apple comparison thing is nuts from both sides and a pointless argument. Apple have already set themselves a certain target market. Samsung includes that market but targets their products at a much wider band. Apple will be able to specialise for their market and should theoretically be able to sell more product into that market but will fall short when comparing the whole range.

The gap on the top end is much smaller than it was. In Dec 2011 Galazy had 21% of the sales compared to iPhone, in Dec 2012 it was 79%). I have no doubt that Samsung will overtake Apple unless Apple target a wider audience. Not everyone is prepare to pay the Apple premium.

I do believe that Apple need to do some more innovation to keep that premium market interested, but that's just my personal opinion.

Android specific docking devices are also available, and at Dion Wired and HiFi Corporation ... so even that is changing. Philips and Samsung sell brilliant sounding/quality Android sound systems. That Android is catered for in this market is telling us that we will see more and more accessories for this alternative ecosystem.
 
I'm confused why the release of the S4 would force Apple to release a CHEAPER iPhone. Surely it should force them to release a better high end iPhone since that's what it's competing against. But as usual these blustery Apple-doom articles don't tend to have the clearest logic.
