Have you guys seen, Samsung are starting to sell hard drives.

Prices are okay, but the catch is, they only have 1 year warranties! :(

1TB is about R1000 incl but I'm steering clear of these drives for a while.

Gdi i have seen samsung hdd's for as long as i can remember, actual drives made by samsung like seagate and what not.

Been around a long time as far as i know.

Samsung has been selling HDD for a long time. I bought one in 2003. Lasted 4 days. The replacement was a bit better... 3 months. :( Have not had the guts to buys another one since then. Stick to the names you know.

I've never seen Samsung drives being sold, ever.

Who sells it then?

Seriously... I've only ever seen Maxtor, WD, Seagate, Hitachi (the normal popular ones) etc... never seen a 'complete' Samsung drive (seen them 'with parts' in a PC etc)

Samsung 1tb has 5yr, outperforms seagate 1tb's and a lot of other drives.

Runs significantly cooler than other 1tb drives since it uses less platters & higher density - 384gb platters if i remember corr.

Got 3x 1tb's and 2x 500gb. Supply them and seagates all the time, never had a problem so far in 3 years. Price is much the same as seagates, give or take about R100.

Edit: I don't know about the pre-2006/7 drives so can't vouch for them or their quality at all. Mine are all late 2006 onwards

I've had a Samsung 80GB IDE drive running for more than three years now, with no hassles whatsover.

I've had seagates carp on me, WD's, a maxtor in a single week one time, but my Sammy's just still keep going! (Though, it's only been +- 2 years so far...)

it's much colder than my WD's too....

+1 you have been living in a cave gdiza :D

And I have a Sammy 4.3G one still running in a WIN98SE PC which forms part of a machine control system, system dated 2000.

Regular backups to an 8G memory stick, with another 4.3G drive on standby :D

Any pros/cons about Hitachi 1TB drives ? How do they compare to WD ?

I have one. It's the server unit. Marked for Sun Microsystems. Decent, takes abuse. Unfortunately, my motherboard only has SATA-1 interfaces so had to purchase a separate PCI card to use SATA-II drives. The only issue I had with this Hitachi was that it took some going before I got the write caching enabled and working properly. It was off by default for some reason, probably because it was intended as a server drive so data loss on writing was important. Slower writing than a flash drive with the thing turned off, but once I had it turned on permanently it has been a pleasure ever since. Only thing holding it back is the damn PCI card.

Running for over a year now and it's trouble free. It also just spent an entire week (!!!!) defragmenting 24/7 and that's a serious amount of abuse to take. Thought I was going to lose it, but it's still working. :)
