Samsung i780

Mkay, i have the i780 sitting right next to me :)

I actually just entered into this thread to post a review just like yours.

One point I will re-mention is the mouse. It really is a nice little feature, once you set the speed to max. I find I am using it more than the touch screen at the moment - because it's easy.

Raesteyn, how did you get the Garmin working?

I opened the program, clicked activate, entered the coupon, and waited. The sms came - but it didn't do anything. The Garmin program said it was still waiting for the sms to arrive. Very weird. Maybe I will try it again later.

The i780 so far seems to be the best form factor PPC I've had. The Tytn II was great, but the lack of one hand functionality got me. On the i780 - I can virtually do anything with one hand!

Anyone know where I can get a 4gb/8gb micro-sd for a resonable price?

Edit: An I am also glad I opened the box in the shop. I was about to buy a car charger, and was VERY impressed to see one in the box already!!!

Lol... nice.

It does take awhile to set itself up, even after the sms comes, try doing it again and leave your phone for a while, if there is a problem it will let you know. Mine took about 3-4minutes. I also find myself using the mouse more than the touch screen, it just seems more functional...

I to prefer the form factor over my wizard (imate k-jam - baby tytan.. lol) the keyboard is taking a bit of getting used to but other than that its perfect for one hand use.

I am not sure if you will be able to use an 8gb micro sd, i have only heard of guys going up to 4gb - it is a very kitted out device though so it will probably work.. just test before you buy. The prices are very generic at the moment, so check places like incredible corruption and makro, the prices are all the same... 2gb cards are +- R250 and 4gb's are about R390 i think.

I was also very impressed with the car charger, all the reviews from the US i have read complain about not having a car charger included, i guess we are just lucky :P

PS: Just a side note, i got mine on mtn pro-call 120, im not sure if the package is the same with vodacom etc.

Great. I will try the Garmin thing later.

What I am also looking for is the touch scrolling functionality. I notice it works in Opera, but I'm sure there is a CAB somewhere which enables the touch scroll (iPhone like) scrolling capablitly. Maybe WM6.1 brings that feature in August. I just remember my TyTN II which was running Windows Mobile 6.1 had it!

Google "pontui for the i780", its a brilliant app that came out last year, alot of work has gone into it and it is free. Check it out. I put it on my wizard when it first on new years (yes there was a countdown before the link became available) and it was great, unfortunately the wizard has a slow cpu so it got laggy and i removed it :P

For more info on the htc home plugin etc check out xda-developers... they have everything.

Check this out to, im gonna install now... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=388579

The next step is to figure out where one can buy a pouch or case of some sort for the i780, there are some very nice leather flip pouches and general screen protectors available over seas but as far as i can tell there is nothing on the local market. Perhaps going shop to shop will help, google.co.za boasts some very fruitless results.

mmm.

In an interesting move, tonight I disabled the mouse and made the touch pad 4 way navigation, like a d-pad. It works surprisingly well - and I actually think I like it better than the mouse. I ran accross an application on Modaco.com that allows you to map a button (like the camera button) to be able to switch between mouse and 4-way navigation on the fly. Really handy to have 4 way navigation in the messaging app, really helpfull!

On a more interesting note, looking for the registry hack that allows me to change the left softkey from Phone to "Programs". Having it as phone is superfluous as the green button does the exact same function.

This phone is getting better and better by the day. Amazingly, the battery has lasted since 7am this morning, and still has quite a bit of power left. My TyTN II would be DEAD by this time of day.

Good stuff to report all around then :) I sent an email off to Garmin South Africa, not really expecting a real response... i was more expecting a generic email telling me about why Garmin is locked on one card only... to my surprise i recieved an email back saying that the software has been unlocked and i must re-register on my bigger card, now i have garmin on my 2gb. Also after reading up on xda i found out that you can use an 8gb card without installing any patches.

I installed the htc home screen and put all my apps in there, so i havent really thought about remapping, i am glad to know there arent any issues when messing with the registry though, that opens up many customization options.

After reading this i checked my battery, its sitting at 70%, funny thing is that the closest it came to charging was 10 min yesterday when i copied emails across... perhaps the batteries take a while to come into themselves? My spare battery is gonna have to get used to being lonely... lol

Lol... thats googles optimized search for you. This thread pops up a few times when googling the i780 as well, theres definite google love on this site.

Caspa - You wont be disappointed mate... pictures on the net dont do it justice

I installed the htc home screen and put all my apps in there

Does the HTC home screen work well with the screen resolution?

Did you have to install Realvga to get any apps to work with the square screen resolution?

Also, besides the standard WM6 apps, are there any special Samsung apps pre-installed? I know the I600 had some cool Samsung apps like a converter, very good alarm clock etc.

It does, only little quirk is that the middle row of numbers are slightly cut off at the base, hardly a reason not to use it though. Ive seen worse bugs in the samsung today plugin.

I havent really gone to far with various apps, im waiting for a rom update before i go all out but from what i have read you will need the realvga to get quite a few apps displaying right. Problem being that even though the screen is 320x320 some apps (compliments of windows mobile - go microsoft - woohoo) still think the phone is 240x240 as wm6 was built to support treo and palms square screens which are 240x240. 320x320 is still a fairly new concept but i am expecting many fixes in wm6.1 which the sgh i780 is in line for. Worst case scenario... that i have seen, was that the app is pushed to the left or right of the screen. - please note though, the difference between a 320x320 and a 240x240 is not the actual size of the screen but the dpi. 320x320 = 128dpi (more space, smaller icons) 240x240 = 96dpi (less space, bigger icons, apps fit full screen - you just have to scroll down). Realvga lets you choose between the two. So take a normal pda, for example the tytan 2, with its 240x320 screen - 240 from side to side, 320 from top to bottom, apps are generally built to fit from side to side which means their width is set to 240, for apps to run correctly on the i780 they will need to have a width of 320 (top to bottom on the tytan 2). Therefor a decent test one can do when going from a tytan type phone to the samsung and wandering what apps will work, try opening the app and changing your screen orientation (slide out the keyboard or however else you want to do it) The view you see when the orientation has changed is likely what you will see on the samsung... just smaller. (not sure about the dpi's... i may have got thm the wrong way round... but im sure you all get the idea :P )

Yes, the mobile converter is there as are the alarm clocks. It also comes pre-installed with opera, mini player (very cool little widget which pops up on the today screen), a great java app which supports the latest and greatest in java utilities and a handy lil app for changing the color of text and your current theme. Other than that the apps are pretty generic to wm6, the beautiful thing about windows mobile is that you are never limited to what you get with the phone... but all the pre-installed apps are fairly decent. Especially with the media gallery and video player.. some minor image editing capability and a shiny camera utility.

What's contracts did you guys get it on & how much did you need to pay extra?

Mtn procall 120... R299 advertised, no extra payment. Total comes up to about 319 a month + R10 (10mb data bundle) = R329... hell of a lot cheaper than the tytan 2.

Raesteyn - your MSN work? Mine says it can't connect due to connection errors - I'm wondering if maybe it's an internet setting or something?

Nope, according to the guys at xda it is a bug in the rom (version of wm6) - It is supposed to be fixed with the next update, im trying to find out from samsung when the update will be available but up till now i am getting no response... perhaps you will have better luck in jhb... PE is useless with these things im afraid.

Got hold of Samsung today, there is an update available so i am taking my phone in today. They say it will only take about 2 hours so hopefully i can get it back today and let you guys know how it goes. They didn't give me any info on the update though, so i am gonna have to hold thumbs that its wm6.1, if not it will be either wm6 D or wm6 E builds (samsung has a knack for only fixing one thing per update :P ) we should be on C (at least mine is... i would imagine anyone else getting the phone now would also be)... more to come

UPDATE*
I went, i laughed, i left.

I went into Samsung, asked for the update,
lady says that all the techies are off sick,
i think... cool, i will come back tomorrow but lets just elaborate on whats gonna happen),
i ask what the update is (wm6 update or wm6.1),
she looks at me,
my phone perks up "lost satellite reception" in a funky american voice,
she peers at my i780 and replies... "i dont think its windows mobile hey"...
i left.

I am going to try again today... hopefully techie flu is over.
