Samsung i780

One thing that did concern me was Samsungs reliabilty : I know tons of people with Samsungs that have failed!

That said, I think all of them are software issues - so with the i780 being a Windows Mobile phone, hopefully the same thing doesn't happen

Anybody else got one of these latley???? i'm due next week Tuesday for mine.

Have you guys seen this

Ouch!! - iPhone killer.
That said, I had - still have the i600 and going by that little phone, i would go for Samsung with Windows mobile anyday... The i780 should be great if compared to the i600. The only hassel with the i600 was the smartphone edition of WM (not a full pocket PC) but it served me very well.
Will be looking at the i900 next year in April when my other contract expires.
I also upgraded the i600 to WM6 and loaded the full Office Mobile for smartphone - works a treat.

I780 is by far the best PDA to get at the moment. I went and looked at it yesterday at MTN and i gotta say it is a sexy device and its very thin for all the features it packs, it comfortably fits in my pocket and is not bulky at all. I should be getting mine today or tommorrow hopefully.

I780 has everything the tytn II has and more, it has a bigger screen, it is more compact and has a faster CPU. The Tytn II retails for R8900 and the I780 is Currently priced R5,022 at MTN. With a CPU running at 624mhz NOTHING beats that !

Does anyone know what the latest ROM version for the i780 is? When I select 'Version' under System Settings on mine, it displays PDA/PHONE: i780JCHB1. Is this old or new? Where's best place to upgrade ROM? Samsung Vodaworld? I guess DIY ROM upgrade will void the warranty... Any idea when the WM6.1 ROM will be available?

Installed Opera 9.5 after pre-loaded Opera 8.65 started freezing up, works beautifully!

This thing is Exchange's best friend 2008!

Mine is the same version. the thing that worried me was when I started syncing with the exchange server, it mumbled something about vlive! Eish, I certainly don't want that cr@p on my phone. Is this standard?

They tried that trick with my last phone (SE P990i) so I took it back and demanded a fresh install without their branded junk. The phone was waaaaaay better after that.

Oh well, looks like a trip to Vodaworld is in order.

I think the Vlive! stuff is the embedded network setting to connect to VC's access point, if you go into settings, it's merely the IP and proxy settings to connect you online - you can rename it to whatever you want. My i780 has no branding of Vodafone (i.e. VLive) on it like previous Moto Q9H (also an awesome handset) and there's also no ugly RED Vlive/Vodafone garbage installed on it, so I guess it's free from that curse...

Another Problem: My "Sounds & Notifications" settings simply reset to default every day or two. Can't establish a pattern here, but it's irritating as *&% to be unaware of that incoming IM, SMS or email as all custom vibration, ringtone and other notification settings just disappear...

Anyone got any feedback on the ROM issue?

I've had the i780 for the past week as seeing that its my first PPC, I'm pretty impressed.

Our local version here the i780JCHB1 is a couple of ROM's out of date as they have released the E1 ROM overseas.

A guy over in Malaysia cooked a ROM that included WM 6.1 but he seems to have taken that off the "market" at the moment. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=409258

Another interesting i780 thread I've come across is at PPCSG, http://www.ppcsg.com/index.php?showforum=16

Yes what's the story with that? On my old P990i, I could just download via the net. Perhaps a trip to vodacare is in order?

Called the Samsung office at Vodaworld and he said I can bring my phone there and they will upgrade the firmware.

I'll try it.

Sounds good hilton! Please let us know what the outcome is! The lady at Samsung I spoke with could not provide any info on ROM versions etc. so what version exactly is the newest over here in SA remains a mistery for now...

That's a real shame. Here is the post I tried to put up last night, before something went a little wonky:

Hey

I'm a first time poster but I thought I'd post my experiences with the Samsung I780.

When the phone is run for the first time, it automatically detects the VLive! settings off the Vodacom sim card. Don't worry though. They have ruined the phone by rebranding everything like they did with the Motorola Q9H. ;) You can get the ordinary Internet and MMS settings from Vodacom's website or via *111#.

Mine also arrived with firmware version B1 (the last 2 letters of the ROM). I believe that the latest update available from Samsung is the E2, but you do have to take it into your nearest Samsung service centre to get it. It is possible however, to get the E1 firmware and load it on your phone yourself, though you must be running a computer with Windows XP (32-bit) to do this. As was mentioned though, loading a new firmware will probably void your warranty.

If you are feeling brave and are up to it, an enterprising individual by the name of EFN has managed to cook up a ... wait for it ... WM 6.1 for the I780 using the best of the E1 ROM and combining it with the advances in the latest HTC ROMs. You can find all the files you'll need as well as the necessary instructions at the following link: XDA Developers. I myself have braved the update process and after many hours of trying to get Mirage to detect my phone (and attempting to get my phone into stupid detect mode ... which is unnecessary) managed to successfully update to WM 6.1, and it's pretty awesome. :) You even get the choice of the commonly recognized HTC Home Screen, or the Samsung Home Screen which was included in later Samsung ROMS (C1 and later I think - see below for an attached image).

Except for a few minor glitches it's running perfectly. :D

If you are concerned about it though, there are rumours that apparently Samsung will release their official WM 6.1 upgrade sometime in August. :)

So did you use that firmware that was taken off the market (so to speak) or is it back on again?

Is it worth attempting?

I'm currently using EFN's WM6.1 (v2.1) firmware, the one that has been "taken off the market". Yes, there's a glitch here and there, but nothing so glaring that it's impossible to live with. I'm rather pleased with the firmware. I've noticed increased performance, with all my programs remaining responsive and usable.

In my opinion, it's definitely worth it, at least until Samsung releases the official upgrade, at which point the real ROM cooking can commence. ;) If you are considering risking the procedure though, rather read through that particular thread on XDA Developers and see the problems that other users have experienced, and see if they will negatively affect your experience with your phone.
