That time of year again whereby I have decided against contracts and to purchase the phone outright maximum budget is R4000 not a cent more. Primary use of phone to surf the web; WhatsApp; games; etc. Always keep a cheap phone with me due to the long battery talk a time and no out of bundle surprises whereby airtime gets deducted.

I am aware there are plenty of makes of phones out there which probably have better specs under the hood than J7. Noticed the Samsung J7 is selling at R3999 (not 2016).

Suggestions would be great

Galaxy J5 if you want pocketability (still good battery life too), Galaxy J7 if you want excellent battery life and a bigger screen. The new Touchwiz UX and Lollipop 5.1.1 gives budget and mid level phones the feel of flagships. I personally have a J2 as a work phone and it beats my iPhone by miles if you look at things like battery life.

One thing to note is it doesn't support Quick Charging or wireless charging, so when plug it in it will take +- 2h to charge.

Look at the Xiaomi redmi note 2 for that price, a friend has the j5 and uhmm yeah the Samsung j series really is bottom end. We got my wife the redmi note 2 for R2900 and really pleasantly surprised and she came from an Samsung S4.

Hi
portability vs screen real estate?
what is more important to you-simple as that.

The Huawei P8 Lite is R3499 at CNA. Excellent device that's got more features and better performance over the J7.

Not bad for R4000 at game
Damn, dat (lack of) bezel.

I'd go for the Huawei P8 Lite too, they are really great value for money. The Redmi Note 2 isn't bad either if you want something with more screen real estate, 1080p screen, a beefier CPU and dual band Wifi.

The Huawei on the other hand has a dual LED flash and NFC as well as a brighter main camera aperture which the Xiaomi doesn't have.

A colleague of mine got the J5. It was so meh. The xiaomi redmi 2 is kilometers better than this one. I saw on carb someone selling p8 lite for R2100. That doesn't seem to bad

The P8 has gorilla glass. You can always load your own launcher if the Huawei one is meh.

The Hisense Infinity KO would seem to be the logical choice, as its virtually indestructable. Samsung +1 for the after sale service. I am not that familiar with Huawei smartphones but a colleague of mine swears its the best phones he has ever owned (p6, p7, p8lite and now a G8 with VR goggles).

I'd also vouch for a Redmi Note 2. Its got a nifty 5.5 inch screen with a very high pixel density so visuals are awesome.
