I am due for an upgrade. Originally wanted an Iphone but the waiting list worries me. Some guys from vodacom tell me 3 weeks, others say they have been waiting for 5 months.

The blackberry is also an option but once again they do not have stock. So there is a waiting list. Also the internet problems that have been discussed here on mybb worry me a bit.

So what do you guys think of the Samsung Jet? They have stock and it seems like a decent phone. http://www.samsungjet.co.za/

Samsung Jet is a very good Feature Phone, IMO. What do you want out of the phone Patty? Also the Garmap software loaded on the phone does not have any maps on the phone, it's downloaded each time you plan a route (there's pro's and cons behind that) And because it's a feature phone you can't install new software on it, like with the Symbian, iPhone, WinMo and Android phones.

It's an immensely good looking phone. The feel of the Jet is great, it's fast, and I reckon it's the best looking touch device out there at the moment. It's a phone I'm considering as well.

Just wish the manufacturers of these current devices would remember that what most people want first and foremost is a phone. Pretty much everything I've seen tells me that the actual phone part of the Jet's functionality could use a little polish.

You mean you like the look of all the Samsung Touch phones? Cause they all look exactly the same unfortunately... Yes the Jet is fast *Thumbsup* but not smarter than a smartphone.

@Patty: Do you want a good Camera? Do you want a touch phone? Smart/feature phone?

I don't want smart, I want responsive and usable. Smart most often leads to complexity that degrades the user experience when actually putting the device to use rather than playing with it as a gadget.

Then you'll probably enjoy the Jet a LOT! Have you looked at the SE Aino? Also looks like a very nice phone, with a awesome retail package.

Thanks for the input so far. I use my phone for business a lot. So ideally something to sync between gmail and my work email. Something that is fast and easy. Also I want to be able to access web pages with ease and view details of weather charts etc.

Can one not purchase GPS software instead of using the internet all the time or is the internet usage for GPS minimal?

So I cannot just download applications for the phone?

Something I hate about my HTC S710 is that I cannot mute an incoming call. So if im with a client or something and I dont want to answer I have to either let the ringtone go on and on or I have to end the call. I read on the review for this phone that you just turn the phone facedown and it mutes.

Well the Jet have a very good web browser and almost all the new phones will sync your e-mail accounts just fine. Also the new phones have the Accelerometer sensor that will mute the call when turned on its face.

As far as the GPS and Applications go, I don't know what GPS software is out there for feature phones. Garmin Mobile XT is only available for Symbian and Windows phones. Apparently Garmap (the one on the JET) use about 1 - 3 MB in 600km.

Sounds like the JET will be okay for you if you like it. I'm upgrading now to the SE Satio that's already available and a very good phone. It's about R300 - R500 more than the Jet I think. But you will have all the Symbian Software ready to be used and a awesome camera!!

Have you looked at the SE Aino?

My past 2 phones have been Sony Ericssons, and I was happy with them apart from one point... the proprietary connector they use for headphones and charging. Both phones had the headset connector fail, so I couldn't listen to music. On my more recent model, even using another headset didn't help, because the audio is horribly distorted from the phone itself - though not when I play it over the speaker.

Long story short, while the SEs were good phones, there is no way I'll ever buy anything that doesn't have a 3.5 on the body. I'll also avoid anything that can't charge off a standard microUSB for similar reasons. The bluetooth headset on the Aino looks kind of cool, but I'm not going to count on it.

My girlfriend is still very impressed with the Satio, and she'll probably be getting one over December. We're both near end-of-contract, and want to switch from MTN. The really sad thing is that Cell C offers the best packages at the moment, but since they don't seem to support 3G the Jet's fast HSDPA connection speed and its Flash support would largely go to waste. That said, it isn't like I regularly use my phone as a browser - though that is a serious weak point on the SE phones I've had as well.

Would you guys rather take a N97 over this phone?

There is no chance at all, I'm afraid. The N97 is heavy on features and smart capability, but it is still a bit of an oversized, slow pig of a device.

And way overpriced IMO!

My previous phone was the SE W910i and the restarting of the phone is very annoying, and with time the charger gets worn out so then you need to wiggle the phone until it makes contact. They really need to get a better system:eek:

So yes +1 for 3.5mm jack that the jet have.

The SE proprietary connector is particularly bad since it doesn't jack in in the same way that most do. It's immensely long, and sits outside where it can be too easily dislodged by a marshmallow rolling onto it... and each time you connect and disconnect, the silly plastic retainers on the ends wear a bit more, and the little pins inside bend and grind a little, until making and keeping contact is impossible, and trying to do so seems to damage the device itself.

</rant>

And yeah, the N97 is overpriced for what it delivers. Lot of Nokia fans seem disappointed that the N900 won't be coming here. You can see their point, though - it does look like it has the potential to be the great makeup sex after a rocky period in the relationship. My sympathies to anyone offended by sophomoric metaphor.

That said, one of my other choices is the Nokia 5530. Symbian underpinnings, no wifi or 3G, but it appears to deliver what I want from a phone with the minimum of fluff. Had the hell of a time finding anyone who wasn't Nashua who would sell me one, though, and somewhere during the quest to get one I kind of ran out of steam. We'll see how it goes when The Moment comes.

Disclaimer with regard to the original topic... the 5530 is nowhere near the class of the Jet. It's a relatively cheap XpressMusic touch phone that happens to be a lot simpler, smaller and more conservatively styled than the 5800.

Thanks for the advice chaps. Seems the Samsung Jet is still the best. Also when you get a new phone sometimes you need something totally different to what you have had in the past. Its by far the best priced phone of the other choices.
