Samsung Jet

When you do get your phone, please give us some feedback. Would be interesting!

I did get the Samsung Jet. It is really a great phone. The processor does the job well. A gripe of my old HTC was the lag. This phone hardly has any lag. Good job Samsung!

The touch screen is very responsive and well laid out. The screens clarity and colour is brilliant.

The phone comes with a 2 year license for Garmap. The GPS is a problem. It has something do to with the phone though and not Garmap software. This is because there are 2 apps you can use the GPS with, Google Maps and Garmap. Now when typing in an address on both apps it takes you to a blue typing screen. Then you type your address and when you press ok it goes back to the keyboard. Then you push cancel and it goes back to the keyboard. Twice I did manage to get it to accept what i had typed out of about 10 attempts. So this renders the GPS functionality useless because if you can't put in an address it's pointless. This has to be a problem with the phone's software itsself. The GPS makes the battery very hot and it drains the battery like their is no tomorrow. This is not entirely a problem because the phone comes with a USB charger, car charger and wall charger. It also comes with a nice windscreen mount. So when using the GPS one can just plug it into the car charger, but the car charger cable is too short so you probably wont be able to mount it on the windscreen then. For now the GPS is useless because of the problem described. However when you do get it set up it works well, voice guided and all.

The battery life is not bad at all when doing all other things.

What I really like about this phone is that it is very user friendly! Widgets are awesome. Its a smart phone and user friendly at the same time. I hate having to dive into there and here and there to get something done. This phone does most of its functions with ease and simplicity.

Something else that I like is the fake call function. You can by the press of a button activate a timer that initiates a fake call. You can pre-set the call to how long till fake call, even add a voice on the otherside etc. Great for when you are with clients and are in a hurry. Then you can do the fake call thing and say I have other clients waiting. Endless possibilities.

Im sure a firmware update will fix the GPS problem and the phone will get full marks from me.

Overall im very happy with this phone. It is awesome and by far cheaper than all the other options that were available when upgrading. That was not the deal breaker anyway because this phone was still my favourite regardless of price. ...and Vodacom has stock so no long waiting lists.

Enjoy.

Hi Patty,

I also recently received my Samsung Jet - I really like the whole user interface and the overall user experience!! I have been using my GPS for a few trips now and it works just awesome. I can enter addresses into the blue screen effortlessly and then it searches for possible matches and then i just select one and say "drive here". Its fully voice guided - takes me to my destination everytime and very accurate. It even warned me of a speedtrap once. So I'm quite impressed. I didn't actually feel the battery if it was warm but battery life while using the gps was okay i say. had a 40min trip and the battery only dropped 1 bar if i recall correctly.

The only incident i had with my phone, was underneath the plastic film on the screen i noticed a oily looking substance about 2.5cm long in the middle. I pulled it off and noticed that it was actually the screen. Once the screen is "ON" you couldn't see it at all, but once completely off and under some lighting conditions you can see it. I took the phone back (next day after getting it) and it was sent back to vodacom to "confirm" that there was no water damage or physical damage. My unit was exchange for a new one which i have now and is in perfect condition. Overall I'm very happy with the phone, does everything i want with ease - especially web browsing and the camera is also great! At first i was very scared about getting a touch interface phone, but i must say i'm very glad i did.

dlc... surprisingly your GPS works. Mine just gets stuck in the blue screen. Is there any trick to the blue screen? I think I need to take it back to Vodacom. Im sure it just needs a firmware update.

Ok I find the problem with the GPS. In the blue screen I have to click just off center on the ok button. Half way between the ok and the black border. Then it works. So if I click the ok directly it goes into the type screen.

I don't have any other problem with buttons being misaligned with the touch screen at all, just this one.

So now I am super happy with my Samsung Jet!!!

Yep thats weird, mine is 100% aligned. Maybe try re-calibrating your screen again. Is somewhere in the Settings menu. But then again you say all your other items are aligned correctly. I read through the article in the link above and it says it's not a official firmware update from samsung? is this true? think i would rather wait for an official release before updating. But i don't see the need for that yet.

Hmm... now that I take a look at it, the update appears to be third-party. Not sure Vodacom would like that with regard to your warranty. There are different versions of the update, though... I think we're the 8003XII.

I'll give it a try when I go pick up my phone.

Okay, yeah let us know if you notice any significant improvements etc, Leitmotif. Are there any cool sites to check out for themes/apps etc for the phone?
