If that's true... goodbye Samsung Mobile. I still believe that Android was the only thing that saved their smartphones.

Other than geeks, most people don't buy Android - they get a good deal on a Samsung. Same with iOS/Apple. If it really was Android people wanted then you'd see much better sales from other Android handset makers like LG and HTC. But the don't even feature because they can't differentiate, and Samsung out manufactures them, and out-markets them at networks and through the channel. Samsung is traditionally agnostic about the OS, but it must be getting nervous about tying its own longer term devices success to an ecosystem utterly outside its control. It wants more out of Google than Google is prepared to give. So they're planning for the day when they can buy back their independence.

Samsung has never really been "on" Android

they've used Android while developing towards Tizen (with Bada in between) largely to play up against Apple

Android made Samsung.
Disagree.

Samsung very smartly leveraged Android at just the right time. Other handset makers also did Android, but went nowhere, because they didn't have Samsung's channel nouse. Android is almost beside the point. If the market was really buying Android and not just Samsung, we'd see it in the sales by other device makers. We don't.

Talk that Samsung would be leaving Android has been around for years now. With Google dipping its toes into hardware, I can see why Samsung would have a plan B.

IMO if Samsung was to jump the android ship on their flagship phones/tablets at this moment it would be suicide for these products. Samsung does not have the ecosystem that Google has.

I don't think they'll ever ditch Android - they'll probably offer both Tizen OS and Android devices.

TBH there are only a handful of worthwhile apps on Play Store. Out of the millions available 99% are of no value. You need hardly look past the top ten apps.

Port those apps across to a better OS then I'm not particularly fussed about sticking with Android. I have been under the impression Apple has far better quality apps and mobile OS? But Apple does seem a tad pricey which has put me off it. 9 or 10 Rand for one song on itunes these days and they charge much more for the same hardware.

Just don't get rid of S Note, this app has been extremely useful for me. AFAIK there is no equivalent for what the Galaxy Note II/III and S Pen does on S Note.

Geeks are often the "go to" people when it comes to the "Which phone should I get?" question.

I often help my non tech friends & family with recommendations on new tech devices.

Just last week, two people asked me for recommendations.
My boss's wife - IPhone 5c (best phone available on her package)
My mom - S4 mini (best phone available on her package + she is already a happy Android user)

I know that this is just based my small world but I am sure this happens very often with others...

/not that I consider myself to be a geek

My default answer is usually Apple for the non tech savvy. Despite that I use Android myself. :)

I can't remember when last I downloaded an app. Most of it is all pure bullschit. I've had a major issue with the quality of the apps in Play Store. I am not sure of Apple is any better, though.

Samsung Linux :p which it really is (SLP).

What people do need to know is that it is not only a Samsung baby as they only collaborated on EFL (Enlightenment Foundation Libraries) and this is where SLP came into play, it was called LiMo and when Intel got on on board it was renamed to Tizen. Intel dropped Meego with continuation on Tizen.

Long story short the Tizen Accociation includes these entities on the Board:

Samsung, Intel, Huawei, Fujitsu, NEC, Panasonic, KT, Sprint, SK Telecom, Orange, NTT Docomo, Vodafone

Should anyone consider dropping Android, it can most likely include the above. It is also said that Tizen release version 2.2.1 is production ready and we will see this with the Samsung Gear 2 within the immediate release cycles and the Samsung ZEQ 9000 coming MWC 2014 as stated by Samsung.

The original timeline with LiMo started in 2007 as where Android Inc (backed by Google) in 2005, only started in 2007 by establishing the Open Handset Alliance, strictly speaking they both do have pedigree where Android already went to market.

Most young kids/teens are after Android now.
Samsung just offers their devices at the right price with the right software bundled.
Without Android I don't think Samsung would sell as well.

The problem for Samsung is replacing Android will involve far more than just replacing their OS. They will have to build and entire platform of their own, and in the mobile era that has only successfully been done twice. I am not convinced Samsung has the software talent and focus to do that yet.

There is a possibility that Tizen might have a stronger “geekiness” than Android.

Although it is not based on Android, you can look at Android based variations.

MIUI have a rapid growing market share, Cyanogen went public and general Android customisation like TouchWiz (and all the other bollie). It is rumoured that MIUI is also heading to start their own Linux Foundation.

Apparently Tizen on Samsung will also have Touchwiz, depends on how you associate (is it Android?) with the product.

Who knows, maybe Tizen becomes Android’s opposition within the next 2-3 years due to Samsung sales.

My interest in Tizen however lays with Intel and should they propose a certain architecture...

The Samsung ZEQ 9000 will be the 1st commercially available Tizen smartphone, soon to be released. It also seems to be a mid-range device probably not go up against the Galaxy S5.

I can't imagine why you'd even need a cellphone upgrade if your app needs are so basic.

As for Samsung ditching Android, as much as I'm sure they'd like to be able to do that it isn't going to happen and it makes no business sense. Tizen is nothing. It's suitable for $50 phones and 'smartwatch' type gadgets, but not for full-fledged smartphones and tablets. And given that Android continues to be free and provides them with an enormous app store to leverage, there's no reason to leave Android at all.
