Samsung Omnia HD - i8910

Ah, some very nice activity on this thread since I've last been here, good to see!
At least from the posts it looks like the phone is worth getting, other than the little quirks of the charging / powering on / memory card mix.

Now, I just need to find out when the i8000 Omnia II is coming out, since this is just as good as the i8910, just with Windows Mobile.

I have not heard a single word about when to expect the Omnia II, so I can get old and grey waiting... or did I hear Dec / Jan 2010 this phone may be released?

Damn, and I was basically deadset on getting the i8910 for the last 6 months already - contract expired in Feb this year, and now there is so little stock! ;)

That's great, I went through the same process and had my phone in a week so let's hope the same happens for you ;)

Trust me, I also struggled to get through to the right person, but when I eventually got to her it went quick from there!
 
Ok, Liberty, let's hope this pans out well!

Regarding that i8000, it looks decent, almost as decent as the i8910. I'm biased though - I've had from day one a Symbian OS, and I'd like to stick with it.

Personal preference, I guess. Though the 65k colour screen on the i8000 would deter any consideration I had of buying it... 16 million sounds like a nice, rounded number :D
 
The are a number of diff between the i8910 HD & the Omnia II besides the OS:

- the Omnia II runs a Samsung S3C6410 800MHz processor vs the superior ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz, with PowerVR SGX acceleration on the i8910 HD

- the camera MP'S are diff

- the screen rez is is diff; 480 x 800 in the Omnia II vs the 360 x 640 in the i8910 HD
(however on Youtube is a screen caparison the the i8910 HD screen is arguably better)

- Omnia II is lighter & more pocket-able

- Video recording is obviously diff


I would personally go for the i8910 HD...
 
Yes, I believe you got it, Fiesta. That's^ the big boys right there.

Guess I will still look around for the i8910. Don't think I can wait a few more months for the Omnia II to become available - My N73 is starting to switch off more and more ;)

So, I decided to go for a bit of a walk-about to see if any MTN Service Centres have the i8910 in stock...

The SC outside of Century City was closed just past 6pm, so I went to the one inside, on the Checkers side of the Canal Walk and asked if they had the phone... Yes! They had one left!
(And this after I was there last week asking them to keep a phone for me and when I went later in the week, they were closed for renovations and they reopened today.)

I took it without hesitation and completed my upgrade. I have been familiarising myself with the phone for the last few hours and am not disappointed at all yet... quite a decent phone, very impressed, it is quite nippy!

Will check it out for the next few days and try the different features to see if there are any problems.

One thing they should have improved is the exposed camera lens... Will definitely have to look for a pouch to make sure it does not get damaged or scratched.

I'll have you know, she is a girl (woman / lady), but you may be moving a bit too fast on the bases, maybe some flowers and chocolates will do? :D

I am looking around for the latest firmware atm.

Wow! That was quick! ive been to mtn in pavilion every single day on my way from campus to ask if they have stock, but they always tell me they don't. Mtn's package is really expensive. Autopage has a contract of 133pm and 4775 pay in that i'm interested in and they told me that they will phone joburg if i wanted the phone. How is the phone, is it good and can you please tell me what package you got it on coz i prefer to get the phone from mtn. maybe the price will go down or sumthing.

battery charging & switching on problem!

guys some bad news :(

unfortunately I let the samsung omnia i8910 go flat and switch itself off. I plugged in the charger and once again instead of going into "charge mode" like it supposed too, it tried to switch on! and its being doing that since 6pm yesterday. I left it on charge for ±4hrs and then removed and replaced the battery, but this time it failed to switch on, it just got hung up on the samsung splash screen.:mad:

have not being able to switch it on since!! so if u had a problem like this before, do yourself a favour and try not to let yr phone go flat and switch itself off!!

there is definitely a problem with the charging / switching on with this phone?

Hi guys, if you watch the I8910 Tutorial video that comes with the phone, she mentions the optical mouse feature while browsing the internet. What exactly does she mean and how do you activate the mouse? Working with big fingers on intricate web pages is not easy. In that regard a stylus would have been nice.(zooming in helps)

tried everything:confused: when I got home last night I placed the battery in the sun!! in the hope that the heat will squeeze enough juice out of it to switch on. Funny thing is when I plugged in the charger it went straight to "charge mode" cool I thought so I left it on charge. about 2hrs later I checked and it had finished charging, so I switched it on. Great it switched on!! back to normal, but then I realised my clone sim was still in it, so I switched off:mad: and replaced the sim :mad: and it has not switched on since :mad::confused:

I will try swop sim cards again tonight and see:confused: cause my main sim card was linked to the phone when I switched it on for the first time in the shop, the clone card was not linked to anything, so maybe there is a problem with the sim card:confused:

there is a new samsung shop at Canal walk I take it there on the weekend - perhaps they can try a new battery or another sim or even rest the phone? although I have doubts as whether they know anything other than to "SEND IT" away :mad:

must say that I using my previous cell phone - the nokia6110 navigator - is a pain in the ass!! it's like going back to the dark ages - like having to rub 2 sticks together to make fire!!!

have any of you been able to load Skype or Fring onto this handset as yet?
 
update on my switch on problem

ok just for the hell of it I removed the 8Gb flash card that came with the phone and it switched on immediately:confused:

to good to be true I thought, so I switched off and inserted the card then switched on and once again it refused to switch on:confused:

removed card and it switched on without a hassle:confused:

perhaps the flash card / garmin software is causing boot up problems:confused:

any thoughts??

if anyone is planning on going to the new samsung shop in canal walk - well unless u interested in R60 000-00 LED tv's / washing machines etc. don't waste yr time!

they do have a small section on cell phones, but the guy working there was amazed at the fact that I had a OMNIA i8910! and wanted to know where I got it from!!:confused: there r no accessories for this phone either:mad:

anyone found any update firmware yet?

or any apps for the i8910?
