Hello guys. So I found this setting in battery settings called " Protect Battery". It limits the charge to 85%. I read somewhere that most manufacturers leave some space for charge even though the battery shows 100% when you leave it on charge over night to protect the lithium batteries. So why does Samsung have this separate setting. Do you guys recommend using it?

As a side note. I drive a lot and use Waze every time. I keep my phone plugged into my car charger. Is that bad for the battery (even if the protect batttery option is used)? I also read it is bad to let the battery get below 20%, so hence I keep the phone charged in the car etc.

I wish my OnePlus had this setting, I keep my battery between 30 and 80. I also don't use the fast charger.

Its a schlep but I have not found anyone that does battery replacement for my device and this method is meant to maximise battery health.

99% of the time I let my battery go down to under 5%.

I always charge my battery to 100%, but I don't leave it on charge overnight. (except for when I really don't have a choice).

Why only charge it to 85% though?

It's like making your cars fuel tank half full when you know you're going to need a full tank.

Apparently you get more cycles out of the battery by limiting charge and discharge.

I thought it was bs but a while ago I read a study on it and it changed my mind. But for the life of me, I can't find it

Sure, I can see that there are some truth in it ... but we aint talking like triple lifetime here, are we? My phone gets abused in this department and I drop to 0% regularly and charge to 100% all the time but try not to do the overnight thing - 4 years later the battery is fine, not the best, but fine. Can still survive a day. I do not see how abusing the phone less would've improved the situation much.

If you could make your cars engine last longer by only filing up to 85% would you do it?

I use the battery saver setting on my phone. 15% really isn't that much if it is going to improve my batteries life span.

I agree in principe, but rather than the fuel tank analogy, think of it like the interval between oil changes: You can always drive up to the recommended service limits, but the damage done to the engine is cumulative.

Keeping between 15% and 85% is always better, but if you really need to go beyond those limits occasionally, the one-time effects are small.

Same with the Solars,DoD affects cycles, some manufacturers cheat by derating batteries by underrating their "full" capacity or lowering the charge/discharge rates

Basically the capacity of lithium battery cells gets fastest degraded when charged to maximum capacity. It’s fair enough on large capacity batteries like for solar perhaps or if you don’t typically go through your phone battery before the end of the day but if you are a power user charge that thing to 100% or else you’ll be charging the thing repeatedly anyway.

Yeah it is a schlep and I do charge the phone many times a day but in my case I haven't found anyone to do the replacement. If I had a Galaxy or iPhone where battery replacement was easily available, then I probably would use it normally.

Even battery replacements on Samsung are a real pita to find decent ones and expensive, especially from Samsung themselves, that's when I was looking at the beginning of the year to replace a S10 battery.

Weirdly enough I discovered recently that Apple replaces iPhone batteries at very reasonable prices, far less than Samsung charges for their flagship phones and you just take it to any iStore.

They kinda lost a class action for forcing people to upgrade their phones by slowing them down as the batteries degraded and not offering replacement batteries
A win for consumers

Do you know how much screen replacement costs for iPhone? I spent R4500 on a P30 Pro screen and battery replacement recently.

That is horrible, it would have been better to just sell it for spares and buy a 2hnd one, they sell for well less than R4500 these days.

The screen repairs aren't nearly as attractive as the batteries, dropping a new model iPhone could be a very expensive affair..
