I need an opinion from someone with some more experience. Both these devices are more or less in the same price range. The Redmi looks like it has slightly better hardware, but on the other hand Samsung is the big name, which might make support or repairs easier down the line.

Are there some recommendations in either directions, or even something else in the 10k range.

you basically nailed the trade off imo

the Samsung still has a CPU and GPU that is far higher than what the Xiaomi uses so in terms of hardware the Samsung will remain useful for longer than the Xiaomi will because as soon as the Xiaomi hits a performance wall and cannot perform with apps of that time the Samsung will still still go on for a fair amount of time

i know benchmarks are not the be-all and end-all of anything BUT discrepancies this high just show that the Samsung is higher up the ladder in terms of CPU and GPU and that affects more across the board than you would think ..... for example better and higher performing camera lenses won't necessarily always give you better photos without enough processing power to resolve the images

having said that it depends on your wants and needs and requirements from a phone - both would do what they say on the tin - if you need the better battery life and faster charging and better camera performance with a superior screen then by all means the Xiaomi is the solution but if you need raw processing power to perform more complicated tasks and use some seriously powerful apps then in that situation the deck is stacked toward the Samsung

IMHO once you decide what you want to use the phone for then it will be easier to make a decision based on the aspects these two very different phones excel in

Depends on what you want the phone for, the Exynos 2500 is way ahead of the of the MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Ultra in almost every aspect, the CPU is about 2-3 faster in all benchmarks and the GPU is almost 5 times faster in most benchmarks, if performance and gaming are not a concern the Redmi has a nicer screen, better battery, better IP rating for water and dust.

Can't beat the POCO phones for value in South Africa, I generally find they are by far the cheapest and best value Androids we get here, through obviously since they are generally parallel imports the warranty can be a concern.

I think I value performance over the camera, the battery life on the on the Redmi is super tempting still. However, after MattyW's recommendation I looked at the POCOs and the F8 pro ticks a lot of the boxes. The Question then becomes: is the performance gain worth the R2k to 3k price bump.

What's your usage of the phone like? Do you game a lot? That and camera performance would be where you notice real differences.

Samsung UI sucks. In my opinion.
Is it really that different? With the ui8 update? I've had many different brands over the years and with the Android 16 updates they all are pretty much the same

I game a bit, I don't take loads of photos, and as long as the quality is better than utter crap, I am generally fine. The thing I really want is for a device to last as long as possible before it becomes frustrating to use. Currently my Samsung A24 got to that point.

I would say go for the Samsung then, the 25FE shipped with Andoid 16 and promised 7 years of updates so it should get to Andoid 23 if Samsung maintains their update policy. Even the S25 and S25 Ultra are only guaranteed until Android 22 as they shipped with Android 15.

The CPU and GPU are also some of the best and will last for quite awhile. In my opinion Samsungs also have better build quality than the POCOs or Redmis, you can also get Samsung care in South Africa which will give you accidental damage protection and screen replacements for a fixed cost.

I'd say the S25 FE is probably your better bet for longevity, considering the long software updates and the better processor. Only caveat would be the battery: I'm pretty sure the Redmi will do better, as the Samsungs I've known haven't lasted well. You could always replace it, of course.

The Poco F8 Pro will likely solve the battery problem and be faster for longer - whether or not it's in your budget is up to you. Over a 4-5 year period, will that extra R3k be that much?

where do you get an extra R2k to R3k from? The Samsung is R12999 on a Vodacom special offer (might be cheaper at Takealot) though the ones from Takealot are probably UAE or middle East models and the usual warranty caveats will apply (having said that my S24FE was from Takealot and it is indeed the UAE model so updates are a week or two later and im pretty sure i dont have much in terms of warranty but even if i had then it would pretty much be close to over by now) and the F8 Pro is R12999 ..... so are you really looking at the S25FE or the older S24FE or looking at S25FE at places like takealot where its likely not a local model

https://www.takealot.com/poco-f8-pro-5g-12gb-ram-512gb-rom-parallel-import/PLID100767349

https://www.takealot.com/samsung-galaxy-s25-fe-5g-256gb-dual-sim-jet-black/PLID99469646

in the same way if you could stretch your budget to this

https://www.takealot.com/samsung-galaxy-s25-5g-256gb-dual-sim-parallel-import/PLID101004481

then this uses the Snapdragon elite 8 generation 1 and in performance terms is like the same level as the Poco F8 Ultra ...... and the F8 Ultra and this model are both previous gen flagship level models given that the S26 series just launched overseas and will soon be available in ZA and that is the current level of flagship

the official ZA based (ZA CSC) models of the S25FE are the same price as the Poco F8 pro (grey stock) or most likely even higher and in those circumstances i would go F8 pro (if you can get the Poco F8 Ultra then even better) and if there are price differences then yes IMHO still its worth it ..... only reason to go for the S25FE then is if you were forced to for example if you were invested in Dex tech (like myself https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/threads/samsung-dex-setup.1313964/ ) but in most measurable and quantifiable ways the Pocos are better than any FE from Samsung - if i was buying now i would seriously consider the Pocos ..... far more seriously than i did back when i bought the S24FE because the Poco's were not easily available in ZA back then

I have to admit I did not check the price of the Samsung recently; I worked from memory. It was 10K on Takealot in February. At the higher price I agree, the POCO does edge out the Samsung.

I was always a Samsung fanboy....... switched to Oppo....... never looked back

the R11k price that the graph shows is for the 128Gb model - im already close to using that amount of storage, but i keep a lot of music and videos on the phone (have to remember they don't use microSD cards on phones anymore for storage expansion) - the R12999 price is for the 256Gb which makes more sense while the Poco is a 512Gb model at R12999
