Samsung to launch new 8TB SSD

Samsung will launch a new range of 2.5-inch solid-state drives (SSDs) at the end of this month, which will include a model with 8TB of storage capacity.

Tom's Hardware spotted the 1TB and 8TB models of Samsung's new 870 QVO SSDs listed on Amazon, although they have since been removed from the retailer's website.

I can see a lot of upset customers that are going to use as a boot drive and experience slow performance or even premature failure.

The problem is that they're not going to know the difference between SLC, MLC, TLC and QLC. On top of that retailers tend not specify the type of NAND or whether there is a DRAM cache in the SSD. So it's hard to get the info to make an informed decision.

It's great that SSDs are getting cheaper, but the reason their getting cheaper is through compromises. If you understand the compromises, you can leverage it to get the best price to performance for your application. If not, you'll be upset that your friend with his 970 Pro recommended an SSD for it's amazing performance, but you're not getting anything close it.

Seems they're using inferior technology to keep the price low;

To reach this highly competitive price point, Samsung opted for QLC 3D V-NAND technology, which usually means lower endurance (write wear) and performance, especially as the SSD reaches full capacity.

For this reason, QLC-based SSDs also usually have a shorter warranty compared to similar products. For what it’s worth, the Samsung 870 QVO's warranty will likely be around three years.
