Samsung TVs vs LG TV's -- Comparison

Hello.

When I want to purchase a "SmartTV", I want it to have some software support for 5 years minimum.
Is this something doable in today's time with LG and Samsung?

The reason I'm asking is, because a friend of mine wants to buy a TV for their new family-home, and needs some input.
He and his wife is watching Netflix, series, and I think Showmax as well.
Some people swears by Samsung, while others swear by LG with WebOS.
I'm a LG WebOS user, been having my TV for 4 years now, no issues, and recently got a update as well, which tells me that LG still supports their TV's.

And no, Skyworth and Hisense is out of the question, because many reasons (shct software, little to no support, connectivity issues, etc)

So, some input?

My budgetish Samsung MU7000 from 2018 (I think) got an update in June.

I haven't had my LG C1 long enough to tell you if I've gotten updates for long. Looking at the C8 which I think came out in 2018, it got a firmware update in Sept this year. So that's 4 years.

I must say that firmware updates doesn't necessarily translate to the same new software / OS as newer TV's. I know the C1 got a new dash over the previous models.

IMO I would rather focus on the features you want over the software. You can always get around software limitations with a media box. But if you buy a TV with a budget panel, there is nothing that can fix that but a new TV.

Been wanting to ask this question.. So I'm keen on getting a skyworth which runs Android 10..im currently using a xiaomi mistick which is android 9(on my non smart TV) Should I just move the stick over to the skyworth even though it's a smart tv(suc9300)

My sister loves her skyworth.

I have a hisense and hate the UI so just use my firetv cube.

Your above example is also a great reason to just get a stick, box or cube or whatever. You just plug it in and your settings are as they were

The thing is, there's so many models of TV's out there, (Have a look on TaL), I am not even sure if that clearance sale is trying to sell off old stock, and the manufacturer dropping support for it in the same year, or in the next year. So, I guess it is a hit-miss on the software side?

I know that there's alternatives to other problems, such as the external MiBox, or whatever Android box.

If I can spare them a extra R1500 not buying a extra MiBox now.
The couple is newlywed, so they are looking to buy a TV for their new home, and was not sure which "brand" to buy, LG or Samsung.

You can usually tell what year model both are from teh model number. My Samsung was a "black friday" special. It felt like a bit of a stripped down version of the similar model line though, but I still got updates for years it seems (even though they were mediocre).

My LG wasn't a stripped down model that was dropped. There was just a special that ran through the whole of Nov last year and I couldn't say no.

Software is touch and go. People rated WebOS as the best on LG's. When I switched to my LG they changed WebOS a bit and I wouldn't call it the best (It went from an app bar to full screen BS with advertising and a row of "recommendations". It's improved now, but I would have prefered the app bar without advertising).

Tizen on my old Samsung did the job but it has never been super responsive.

I think the important thing is the budget here. I can say LG is the best because I have a C1, but I am pretty sure if budget is pretty tight and they get an entry level LG, they will have a WAY different experience. Same goes for Samsung.

In both cases, Amazon, Plex, Youtube, and Netflix are used on my old budget-ish Samsung and my newish LG. I have only seen twitch support dropped on my Samsung for some reason, but I don't really care about Twitch \/

I looked at the skyworh tvs in makro from 6999 to 8999 partly because the demos they play are pretty. They were bad in my opinion. Upscaling was a bit better than the entry level lg qned(which was dire so this isn't saying much) but the panels were noticeably darker than just about everything I looked at (was looking in a higher bracket) still my previous LG would have even been a better choice than that qned but LG controls are clunky for media. I was shocked as the qned was my upper limit for an upgrade. It was worse than the Toshiba z770 which I bought and worse than the hisense u7h which was second best for what I threw at them. I didn't really like media controls on the hisense but they would have been manageable.

While I can't quantify them the skyworh tvs had more playback issues/artifacting but it's entirely possible this is only flash stick related but I do often play media off a flash stick.

Skyworh also placed the flash drive in a confusing place and the media controls were worse than LG. Just my personal experience but think it is best to go test in store.

I didn't bother to test any Samsung, I saw some reviews about their ui and it wasn't for me. . Also my last Samsung broke 2 months post warranty, LG broke about 9 months after warranty (and it was a floor model).
