okay this is a specific problem with MXIT(www.mxit.co.za) that happened about a month ago, and it hasnt been sorted out yet, so the only place i see this being solved is here.

okay its like this, Vodacom has 2 data profiles (exluding mms) Vlive and Vodacom.gprs.

Vlive for a long time did not use sockets (polling was used) to transfer information between server and client. so mxit functioned all happy and good, but msg delivery times were slow. so vodacom finally upgraded something somewhere, and changed the profile to allow for socket connections. now msg's arent being delivered at all or connectivity is lost after a few msg's. from what i can tell all samsung users with the z500 experiance this (some sony erricson users as well), not sure about other phones.

Vodacom.gprs always allowed socket connections therefore this profile never worked with mxit.

more detailed info on the problem here
this link is the z500 thread so u gotto scroll a few pages until u get to the issue im talking about

v3g? HELP!!!

The vodacom.gprs setting on your phone uses the Internet APN. Using this APN you can open any outgoing socket, port 80 or 8080 for HTTP for example or port 9119, the MXiT socket for their java applet.

So, firstly, the APN you use should be the internet APN and it won't block you from opening any outgoing socket to MXiT, or any other service. Currently tens of thousands of users use MXiT this way over the Vodacom network.

Using the VLive APN will also work, but remember you'll pay normal data rates for non-VLive stuff, same as if you're using the internet APN.

Depending on your phone, you will either connect via port 9119, if the phone supports socket connections from the MXiT application or via normal HTTP (8080, I think, might be 80) if the phone does not support socket connections.

Currently more than 60% of all connections to MXiT, from the Vodacom network, uses socket connections while the rest uses HTTP.

Having waffled all the above to give some background, can you give a more detailed explanation of where you think it breaks?

I've made contact with the MXiT technical crew and they're also looking at your postings on their own forum and will revert.

(I guess you can say, you got our forum to make contact with their forum! :) )

OMG Finally!
v3g u make stuff happen. anyway everything u said was discussed on their forum by their technical guys also. so its like this:

1. Force use of GSM900/1800 (so it doesnt swap to 3G and maybe lose connectivity which does occur)

2. Using Vlive setting

3. Java app given complete network access, using vlive.

okay thats teh phone scene, now for the problem itself

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

the phone can log-in and get an updated userlist,
so it does exchange data
at first i can send at max 1 msg to any contact, and can recieve 1 msg from any contact.

thereafter i cant send or recieve msg's

Okay 2 strange things to note, if i close the phone, it goes into standby (application paused) now when using http (polling), connection should timeout after 180secs, that means when i open the phone again, mxit shouldnt work. this used to happen as normal

but this restriction isnt true when using sockets, as no timeout occurs after 180secs. but the strange thing is, everytime i open the phone, a userlist update takes place (ppl who were offline come online, that kinda update), so the phone magically exchanged data with the server? when it wanted to...

this isnt phone specific btw cos it works with the competitions sim card *cough* with sockets!

EDIT :: The updating of userlist after the timeout window expires isnt working anymore, i cant recreate it for some reason, but it used to...

From your description the initial reaction would be that its the handset. However, your statement that on the other networks it works points to a network issue.

I suspect it's one of those combination problems where the specific handset on specific radio equipment gives unique symptoms.

Won't you PM me your contact details, number, e-mail, etc. I'd like to open up a mail trail with yourself and the MXiT and Vodacom technical guys. Sounds like we need to do some debugging.

Or you could just get a Nokia...:) Just kidding!

happens on a nokia 6600 as well and a SE model that i cant find on the mxit forum now...

so muahhaahah nokia!!!

anyway we got the software to work finally on the z500, this is after about a month or 2 of waiting for mxit technical to do it on their own. once i gave v3g a msg and got him on the job, it was solved after just 2 days...

and the solution is... *drum roll*

install the moto v600 mxit software
and it works perfectly with vibrate and tones.

thanks v3g

No problem, glad you're sorted.

Another example of how Vodacom scr**s it's customers, heh Skeptik?

By helping a mxit user send data messages, 'Vodacon' just reduced it's own SMS income and conned itself out of those massive profits. What a fatcat company.

Actually MXiT is the fastest growing application on the GPRS network. We're currently working with the MXiT team to build a more robust architecture to give better performance and capacity.

one last queston, the z500 is a class 10 gprs phone plus it has 3g, the d600 is a class 12 gprs phone but no 3g. the question is, does my phone support EDGE?

hi ppl.

i currently connect my pc to the internet through gprs with my sony-erikson. Now what i want to know is, is it possible to play, say for example swat 4 internet games, with gprs? at the moment i am unable to get a list of servers and i assume it has to do with vodacom's server ports. can anyone help me in this regard?

z500 problem

I have a problem going to webpages on my pc, connected via bluetooth.
the phone did work a week ago, now it dails in *99#, connects but no pages want to open.
