Guessing the test was done before the Z2?

As mentioned I've saw the Z and Z1 display against my S3 and even though on paper it was supposed to be better, I preferred my S3 screen. However I've read the Z2 is better (I'll search for links now) - but the immediate thing that grabs the user is the Galaxy saturation and vibrancy. However long term I prefer the more natural and actually run mine on 'professional photo' mode, so I'll be fine with the Sony

Just for interest - they say that USA companies have the same thing with sound. They sounds great, in your face and on the surface seem better - but long term you're going to take home British speakers and amp

Nice try, but when comparing two things it helps to look at more than one side of the issue. Where's their review of the Z2 display, which came out later in the US (if even available at all there)?

Oh, right, they haven't reviewed it. At least not according to Google. Also try reading the review you linked to, it confirms the S5 has the Pentile fake resolution. And they try to pass it off as a good thing.

This. The S4 was the last Samsung I will buy. Their devices are just a rehash of the previous gen without any innovation besides a few gimmicks. I'll be looking at HTC or Sony.

I will miss Samsung's AMOLED displays though...

It's no coincidence that when Apple stopped innovating so did Samsung stop "innovating". It always has been a brand based on hoodwinking and marketing rather than substance. Samsung and its huge marketing budget also benefitted from being in the right place at the right time when people were first making the move from dumbphones and Bb's and getting exposed to Android. Often times they then associated Samsung with innovating the Android platform and though "what a great innovative company."

Since enough time has passed for everyone to now have been exposed to the realisation that Samsung just produce bloated boring hardware much of the pollish has come off the turd, and people are looking for other brands to associate with. All I knew when I got my latest phone is that I didn't want more of the same drudgery that is Samsung.

Does anyone remember the Samsung phones of a few years back ? Was there one single innovation that they lead and the market followed ? Ever ? Even the phones games were remakes of the nokia classics. It's always annoyed me that a company so dead set on copying has reaped the rewards of the innovation of others.

Fair comments in that my phone (Lg 2...yeah I "tap" dat) doesn't offer anything exceptionally innovative. But it matches the Samsung S5 for hardware and because of less bloat out performs it. All of this at the price of a S4 mini.

I'll trust their very detailed extensive testing of the S5's display over opinion. Also, go do some reading on pentile matrix. It has NOTHING to do with resolution.

Yes S5 has pentile; it's probably always going to be inherent to Amoled. But honestly - and I'm probably the pickiest most pedantic guy around on this point - the S5's screen is excellent. It's shockingly vivid, but not in a skewed colours kind of way. It wipes the pants off the iPhone5S's screen, which for me always had the edge. I haven't seen the Z2 in person to comment on that but I'm guessing the S5 might still have the edge.

That's not entirely true. It adds an additional subpixel to the rgb pixel array so it becomes rgbg. In the past it has badly affected the appearance of Samsung's screens. The S3 had an awful greenish hue that I could never stand. It's just that in the past couple of years since they increased the density so much and did a better job with colour correction that it doesn't really matter.

I agree - early pentile technology was horrible. It's come along way since then.

The only thing the S5 has going for it is its display, but their devices are getting really boring now.

You'll get a partial picture of screen quality from looking at a spectrum of test results. That will show you exactly how the screen is calibrated, and nits and grayscale and such things. The other side comes from just looking at the screen and getting a gut level reaction. From that side the S5's screen is pretty unparalleled.

Absolutely. You do need to look at tests for each device though. Having a spectrum just for the one is pretty pointless.

Dude, no need to be nasty about it. I never said the screen wins in every category. All I mentioned was that the extensive testing that displaymate do, concluded that it is the best display they've ever tested - and that's with the pentile matrix too.

As I said two colleagues at work have the Z2 and S5, and side-by-side the S5's display just looks better, that's not to say the Z2's display isn't gorgeous. If I had to choose, I'd take the Z2 over the S5 any day, as it's just a better phone overall.

But the way you said it in response to me implies that they tested both, which they didn't. It's easy to be the best ever if you're only competing against older generation stuff. Once they do equally detailed tests of the Z2 and M8, then maybe we can talk about "the best."
