Samsung's profits take a dive

The smartphone market is slowly reaching saturation. No surprise here.
 
...and with other manufacturers i.e. Sony, LG and Huawei also bringing high quality (and better looking) Smartphones to the market it's pretty obvious this was coming.

They've always been bringing high quality smartphones to the market. Long before Samsung in the case of Sony/Sony Ericsson

Yes. I was a P800/P990/P1 owner. I also remember my interactions with their support staff. And the frequency of updates I received.

-1 will not purchase again.

That hasn't changed. And they were still great phones.

Yes. Great phones.

My P800's keyboard broke off.
My P990 had some serious software issues that were not fixed.
My P1 was a decent phone, it had all the issues from the P990 fixed.

Support was very dismissive of my issue reports. They felt buying the new phone is the real answer. Glad to know it's not changed, so I won't bother with them at all.
 
That's why the big fuss about smart watches & little fitness bands now, almost everyone who wants a smartphone has one now. I don't see myself moving from this S4 for at least another year+

As I understand it, the Z and Z1 weren't as good?

I have a friend that did Sony PR and brought one of the models (think a Z) out to show me before launch. It certainly looked better than my S3 and had better specs on paper - but the screen was horrible compared to mine as the biggest turn off. Speed wasn't that fantastic either so I didn't even bother looking at either.

However, Z2 seems to change that and I'm getting in a few weeks
 
They just aren't doing enough to differentiate their phones. Too much spread, not enough jam.

That's the response you'll get from pretty much all phone makers these days. Don't worry about software updates, just wait 3 weeks for the next flagship and buy one.

The Z and Z1 weren't great, they were actually quite poor, because they were the first high-end phones Sony made after dumping Ericsson. Screens were awful and they were stuffed with bloatware.

The P990 and its update, the P1 were brilliant smartphones, back in the old Symbian days. The Xperia X1 and X2 were great Windows Mobile phones, the most powerful things out there at the time when many people in SA were still using monochrome Nokias or at most Samsung or Sony Ericsson dumbphones. The Xperia X10 was their first Android phone and quite ahead of its time, it had things that other Android phones only caught up to much later, like face recognition and Facebook integration in the phonebook (although that was later removed from all Androids again due to legal issues). Also one of the first major brands to use a Snapdragon CPU at 1GHz. All of this months before the first Galaxy S saw the light of day.

Yes, but there's a difference between updating from 4.0 to 4.3 (Galaxy S3) and having 1 update for the life of the phone. But yeah, I will walk off this topic now.

This. The S4 was the last Samsung I will buy. Their devices are just a rehash of the previous gen without any innovation besides a few gimmicks. I'll be looking at HTC or Sony.

I will miss Samsung's AMOLED displays though...

The Z and Z1 have horrible displays. A collegue at work has the Z2 and another has the S5. When compared side by side, the S5's display is still far superior to the Z2. I haven't had a chance to play with the M8 yet.

I know this contradicts my previous post, but if the Note 4 isn't another boring factory push out from Samsung, I might go that route.

I still have my note 2 and honestly nothing I have seen has even remotely made me consider upgrading.
 
Samsung have always been crap phones, anyone remember the early 2000 model phones? android and iPhone gave them a platform to better themselves but it's still a phone made by a washing machine company.

The S5's colour saturation is better than the Z2 (or anything else), but the Z2 has a wider colour gamut, widest of any current phone. Plus the S5 is still infected by the Samsung Pentile cancer. I'm sorry but a Pentile "1080" display just isn't a real 1080 display. It's half the resolution at most.

According to this extensive test, the S5 has the best mobile display every tested.
