Finally they have acted and done something!
Progress! Yay! :)

... however, it cannot be sure that it was an anti-immigrant activist, and they also shot him in self-defence! :(

Johannesburg - A man was shot and killed in Springs after he pointed a firearm at a member of the SA National Defence Force (SANDF), the defence department said on Saturday.

The incident took place on Friday night after the army was providing back-up to the police during cordon and search operations in Gugulethu, Springs, on the East Rand.

Some army members saw a man assaulting a woman and approached the scene. The man then pointed a firearm at a member of the army, who shot back in self-defence.

As regrettable as the loss of any human life is, this is the type of action that should've been employed when the whole thing flared up. Force with bigger force.
The criminals (not xenophobic mobs as government puts it) operate with impunity and very little fear of being brought to book.
If there is any hint of danger toward a SAPS or SANDF member you shoot and shoot to kill.
Finish and klaar!

If groups of people are walking down the streets with weapons, confront them as they are most certainly up to no good. If they threaten and / or fail to relinquish their tools of death, shoot them dead.

You cannot allow more law abiding citizens and guests of this country to be murdered with relative impunity!

One criminal is dead, shame!
Over 40 law abiding people have been murdered, some in the most horrible fashions imaginable, hundreds more injured and thousands more displaced!
I mean WTF!

Arent a lot of the builders from other countries? If they go, how are the stadiums going to be built?

Yes, they are. Funny was just having that conversation this morning with someone else. The Moz guys make the hardest working and most reliable builders... and in the last 5 years they have amassed tremendous expertise in the building industry. Both builders that I know work only with Mozambicans who have proper work papers, but they will not hire anyone else.

I don't know which is the worst. The things that's currently happening in our country or people that actually celebrate violence. And then to call it progress!

If the dude was armed and pointing his weapon then he got what was coming sadly.

No one is celebrating violence as such. Some of us are celebrating the belated return to real law and order.

How can the use of violence not be considered progress in this situation

Can you hold army men accountable in normal case and court procedure or will they have to go through military courts if somebody has a problem when they kill a civilian. I am extremely worried when the army shoots our own people!

I AM MAD actually.

Good question. Probably both.

No Public Prosecutor would be willing to touch this with a barge pole... a clear case of justifiable homicide and self defence... even witnessed by the media. Would be impossible to prove anything otherwise.

If the commanding officer did not give the order to shoot, the person who took the shot could be held accountable. That is why I am against the Army being involved. If a troop messes up he will be Court Marshalled. When you are in a riot squad, you do not have Carte Blanche to shoot at will.

They guy was pointing a gun at the soldier (so they say), so I think it was OK.

Army's actions in an official assignment will fall under army rules i.e. court martial. Normal law doesn't cover combat situations.

As far as I'm concerned, these rampaging mobs deserve nothing more than a bullet between the eyes.

They have no respect for anyone else's lives so why should they waste my oxygen.

Well, "our people" deserve to be shot...

Running around streaming bags of flour in a crate, stolen from someone else. What, you wanna give them a hug?

What ever you feel and think the simple truth of the matter is this. A armed assailant pointed a firearm at a member of the SA security forces. What did this guy expect to happen. Was he arrogant enough to expect to point a gun at the SANDF and nothing will happen to him. He clearly has issues.

IMO the SANDF were totally justified in their reaction and should act as required in a situation.

Agreed, this whole situation has become a crisis of HUGE proportion. It seems that the rest of the world sees this, but not much is done by our own. People quickly realize that what they are doing is really stupid when they stand a chance to lose their lives. Zero tolerance as hard as it is, and debating the merits of deploying the armed forces in any situation is something which can happen in times where people are not being burnt alive. For now they need to hit hard and fast with no words, no negotiations, clear orders and being allowed to carry them out is a good thing.
