SanDisk launches 32GB solid state drive

I know you are happy RPM! :) We've spoken about the possibilities of this hardware. I wouldn't mind one, but the price is bound to make all the difference in the short term. I want holographic memory to come to market now too.

holographic memory? now that would be interesting.i wonder what the specs are on this new hdd,is it faster than normal hdd's it is sure more expensive.

If anybody is buying I will take one please :D

I assume that the boot up times will be drastically reduced and HDD failure –which happened to me three times in the last six months – will be something of the past…

Also, a though generated when thinking about the iPhone.

What is power consumption of solid state 'vs' traditional HD? What %age of the laptop power budget is the HD anyway, and will this lead to better battery life?

cheers,
D

Well, no mechanical failures, but there is a limit to how many times you can write/overwrite flash memory. Most drives though are intelligent enough to optimize drive life. Still, this is an awesome product! Awesome price too though!

I spoke to a data recovery guy a while back, and on laptop he recomends only Seagate and Hitachi GST, they have the lowest failure rates.

Incidentally, we have 30 Lenovo laptops issued to our sales people with the shock sensor to shut the drive down if it detects drop.

Thus far (1 year) no failures, esp. good when I consider the 30% failure rate we experienced on laptops without the technology.

It's good to see solid state coming to the fore now, the reduced power consumption and increase speed should help to make laptop performance more like desktop, notwithstanding the dramatic improvements we've seen over the last few years.
