Whats the possibility that these people have a serious mental illness, are lazy students who need an unquestionable excuse for something, or does indeed, have an evil spirit in them? rofl.

Why? Do the students who go to lsuacner-approved psychologists just say "I have a psychological illness" and do nothing at all. Or are you just being offensive?

Once you have finished your exam, you can run down to the sangoma's hut and have him/her/it throw the chicken bones (KFC nogal) to see if you are going to pass or not...
And if not, maybe purchase that special bottle of muti to curse your stupid teacher...

Students with excuses, use excuses, therefore if they are told they are bewitched (so the sangoma can make money "curing" then) they would simply do nothing. Students I knew, thanks to spending too much time in a coffee shop, who had metal illnesses were the most useless people I knew. I liked to study where there was noise around me and got to know the crowd who loved being mentally ill, artistic idiots. They did nothing at all, all day. Most of them were just lazy, they were sane otherwise.
So how well do you know students?

Well enough to know that some students will look to anything for an excuse - you can't point to traditional counselors as being unique in this case.

A real doctor, bases his diagnoses on fact. There is little room for error and they will not give a student an excuse to stay away from class by blaming an evil spirit instead of telling the kid to get out of their office.
A real doctor, undergoes extensive training. He will not abuse his doctors pad easily once he has his medical license. As an accountant, I will not allow my clients to steal nor will I steal from them, except by charging excessive fees to which they have no choice but to agree to,
because I studied 4 long years, I will not go throw that away.All a sangoma does is look at the clothes the guy is wearing, if his watch and shoes are expensive, he only needs to tell the kid that there is an evil spirit, he can stay home for a week with a "sangoma's letter" and pay R500 for further treatment. How can one dispute the sangoma except by saying, bull****!
Do you really think a sangoma is more objective than a medical doctor? I think sangomas is bull****. There should be no place for them in a civil society.

They do. I used to laugh at them "excuses" during my tenure as a House Comm member and Sub-warden.
..also, I remember some dude who slept through an exam, went to the UCT Health Center straight afterwards and passed the exam with 65+ percentage.
But he was very smart at cheating the system. He is now an assistant lecturer.

I didn't say that I think that a sangoma is more/less objective than anything. You're of course welcome to your opinion on sangomas, but nobody is forcing you to go to one and many people may feel differently to you. Why should they not have the choice of therapy that they feel is suitable for them?
Students are not being held as prisoners on the UKZN campus which means they already have the choice of using an off campus Sangoma.

That is a great thing by the institution. Good thing that there is a suggestion to bring those service even closer to those students.
Is there access to a GP on campus?

w.r.t to UKZN, Full-time clinics are staffed by part-time medical officers, and full-time professional nurses are provided on campus to attend to the health problems of students and staff. Services include family planning, health education, pregnancy, AIDS testing, pre- and post-test counselling and treatment of minor ailments. Clinics do assessments of health problems and referrals where necessary. Doctors and physiotherapists can be seen by appointment.
I know at UCT, we had access to a GP on campus.
Ok. At least all cultures are presented then.
If a sangoma is endorsed by the university, then dodgy "medical" practices are condoned by the institution. Students can do what they want, but the university should not allow a sangoma do express an endorsed acceptable opinion regarding the health of their students.
1. They risk the lives of the students, as a sangoma can not provide proper medical care.
2. They are making a mockery of medicine and the university, where science and fact should rule instead of mumbo-jumbo.
They are going to abuse the system, I know students, especially some black students (those inclined to go to a sangoma, unlike white students) will use any possible excuse to avoid studying (reflected in the number of black CAs and the students I know personally) now they have an abusable excuse endorsed and accepted by the university. White students will also abuse this sytem, though a white lecturer will tell a white student to go to hell, they can not risk the same with a black student.
If I had free reign to decide if semester tests would count, class tests ect through medical certificates, I would have a 90% average.
