Sanity check
  • Do i need to buy thermal paste?
  • Is that MB the one with the SATA problem? Can't seem to find the Rev 3 on the rebeltech site?
  • Will everything fit into my Chasis?
  • Any drastically bad choices?
  • What have I forgotten?

It's been +6 years since I last build a PC so any advice greatly appreciated!
 
The i7-2600K does not come with heatsink or fan, so you have to get this separately. Normally a fan/heatsink kit comes with just enough thermal paste to complete the job.
 
  1. The CPU's heatsink will come with a thermal pad, so you won't need thermal paste
  2. The motherboard is supposed to be Revision B3, where the SATA problem is resolved
  3. I'm not sure about the case though. If it's a uATX case, then it should be fine. Lian-Li cases are quite expensive compared to the other brands like Antec & Coolermaster, but their build quality is in a class of their own of course
  4. The components are all compatible, but you still need a DVD/Bluray drive.

    I just don't know why you've added a 500GB HDD! Rather just partition the 2TB drive into 2 partitions: OS & DATA.
    You can much rather add another 2TB and setup a Mirror RAID configuration if you want high performance and redundancy for your data.
    If you want very high performance, then I'd suggest that you add a 60-120GB SSD.

    If you can run Hackintosh on the Intel HD3000 graphics, then you might want to look at the Z68 chipset motherboards, where you can make use of overclocking & the integrated Intel HD3000 graphics. I'm just not sure if you get a motherboard with dual digital outputs though.
 
How much gaming are you doing on this rig? I would rather get a 2500k and a GTS 450 if I were you.

Mine did. It isn't a great fan and should not be undone more than once. It works and doesn't need to be great to cool this CPU to reasonable levels.

The past is pre-applied and you peel back some sticky paper prior to putting it on the CPU.

All ASUS motherboards are now revision B compliant and should have the sticker on the box. No need to buy a specific model.

Are you going to play games? The answer will help in advising you on which GPU to buy.

For power, try and get a modular (or semi) one rated Bronze or Silver if you can afford it.
 
So I can keep my OS separately on the SATA 6.0 Gb/s port and the 2TB there for now. And if I do go RAID 5 (which is what I'm thinking) I can have all three drives on the SATA 3.0 Gb/s port.

Normal HDD does not come close to using SATA2 ports, nevermind SATA3. Stick with one HDD if this was part of the reason for 2 HDDs

Your call. If you lose the 500gb, you're R843 away from something like this, which should be enough for Win7 + your dev tools.

Either way its going to be a schweet rig. ;)

But tests done show that toothpaste works best? :)

Jokes aside, the thermal junction difference between the expensive stuff and the cheap stuff is so little (if both is used properly), it does not warrant spending money on.
 
If your rig is already cheaper than what you expected, then ditch the flippen 500GB HDD and install a 120GB SSD (eg. G.Skill Phoenix 120GB / OCZ Vertex 2 SSD), which should cost around R2200, rather than spending extra on a modular PSU.

It is REALLY worth it to get a SSD for development work. I have a 30GB SSD in my office PC, with Ubuntu 11.04 x64 installed on it.
Unfortunately MAX OS X is rather big, so you won't be able to get a way with a 60GB SSD if you want to install OS X & Windows 7.

If R2200 is too much for a SSD, I would urge you to still drop the 500GB HDD and to get another 2TB 7200rpm drive and to run it in RAID 1 (mirroring).
The performance of the 500GB drives are quite poor compared to the 2TB drives.

Well.... there is a new kid on the block (thats mighty expensive) that beats out its competitors by between ±4-12° at low mounting pressure. But any any half decent after market cooler where you can screw it in properly the differences lessen to a max of 4° with the top 5 all being within 1° of each other
 
I will seriously consider this over the weekend. Esquire is having a special on my CPU + MB over the weekend, so I can already save about R 500 there.

Go with Pada's recommendation of the SSD, like he said you already came in way under your budget and now your gonna save another R500.

Do it, just do it!

That is the chipset SATA controller, so you can mix whatever you want on those 6 ports. You don't have to have you array on only SATA 3Gbps ports or only SATA 6Gbps ports. You'll probably want to put your RAID array on the 3Gbps anyway, in case you get an SSD, but if you want to have a system drive and 5 storage drives in a RAID array, you can do that.
