Sanral not ready for e-tolling: Outa

Cosatu on Thursday criticised the SA National Roads Agency Ltd's announcement that e-tolling in Gauteng will begin within two months.

"We condemn the announcement by Sanral, which is arrogantly made even before both houses of Parliament have passed the legislation to legitimise e-tolling," spokesman Patrick Craven said in a statement.

The Congress of SA Trade Unions remained opposed in principle to the move to privatise public highways and create a two-tier public transport service, he said.

"Thousands of workers will have to pay tolls as there is no realistic alternative way for them to travel to and from work and arrive on time. Even non-motorists will be hit hard by the inevitable price increases as transport companies would pass on the cost of tolls to consumers."

Cosatu appealed to motorists not to buy e-tags and make the system unworkable. Mass protests would take place over the coming weeks, Craven said.

In order to prevent economic recession in Gauteng due to e-tolls, and assuming 100% productivity and 3,78m contributors of which only 70% use the e-toll roads, every employed road user in Gauteng has to work on average an additional 29 minutes and 31 seconds every day from now on, in order to pay for e-tolling, in the absolute best case scenario, in a perfect economy where time=money (which is doesn't necessarily). This excludes any potential growth in the province as well - a province that contributes more than a third of the entire country's GDP. Assuming that time does not equal money for 50% of the applicable group, we can calculate that in all likelihood, this number is closer to an hour per person each and every day.

So, all Gauteng road users will have to work at least an additional 59 minutes and 1 second every day to ensure that Gauteng doesn't slip into a recession. All because of e-tolling! Or put another way, every business in the entire province has to become 12.3% more efficient/profitable (read: 12.3% increase - hello inflation!), and no business can close down in the province for the foreseeable future, in order to finance e-tolling.

Well done SANRAL, and well done government, for completely fscking over the country yet again...
