Sanral's e-toll Web site suffered a denial of service (DoS) attack on Friday, according to the agency.
"Some users complained of slow site performance, and our service provider traced the problem to a denial of service attack of international origin," said Sanral spokesman Vusi Mona.
No further details of the attack were available, but Alex van Niekerk, project manager for the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project, said the site has come under repeated attack since going live, but suffered only minor performance degradation.

But now I am really confused, since Sanral said "website not available overseas"

Sanral’s general manager of communications, Vusi Mona, said that the agency decided to only make its website available in South Africa due to cyber-attacks on the site from foreign countries.

The site is also available from Argentina and Austria, Mona said, as some support staff that need to be able to access the site are located there.

So from where was Sanral attacked (can only be Argentina or Austria then)? Also what's up with ITWeb tearing them apart about security every day (pretty much rehashing the same stories over and over again).

Aag they talk nonsense. During office hours their site is slooooow, especially when one logs in, after 17:00 it goes fast again, and then from about 8:45 in the mornings it gets slow again... They are incompetent, blaming all their flops and fails on "hacks" and "attacks".

Well, when your ONLY portal to register, pay and query is down or slow, you have an unworkable system. End of story.

It is mission critical. They have failed dismally and should be sued for loss of income by everyone who couldn't transact properly on their terrible website.

I have personally lost out due to not being able to transact within the 7 day deadlines on account I manage.

And why does it take so long to resolve simple queries, are the DDOS attacks also affecting the support staff's brains or what?

They lie.

The system is so bloody fragile.

I guess ITWeb is rehashing the same stories to possibly spread bad karma about Sanral in general. Isn't that what we all do anyway? :D

The signs were there in plain view on the internet. On the other hand, if their system is not coping with a few attacks Sanral is not doing it right.

So wait, R30 billion doesn't buy you basic DDoS protection from your IT Vendor?

SANRAL never had a DDOS attack... its called USAGE, and they failed on capacity and design
