Huge breaking story:

Johannesburg - The South African Football Association finally took the decision to fire under performing Brazilian Joel Santana and have installed his two assistants Jairo Leal and Pitso Mosimane as caretaker coaches.

The decision was taken after a meeting of the newly elected Safa executive committee which listened to the briefing from the three assessors Clive Barker, Gavin Hunt and Jomo Sono who tabled their report following the team’s tour of the Scandinavian countries of Iceland and Norway.

Bafana Bafana lost to both countries by identical 1-0 margins which stretched South Africa’s losses to eight after nine matches and plunged the country to its worst record in 20 years as their Fifa ratings dropped from 72 to 85.

The Safa National Executive Committee meets on Friday to appoint a coach or coaches that will lead the country to the 2010 Fifa World cup finals and already the name of Carlos Alberto Parreira has been thrown into the hat.

Joel Santana fired

All I can say is thank you SAFA!

Unfortunately I think we will find that although Santana was never the best choice the problem runs a lot deeper than the coach. The football administration in this country is shocking. The player's too seem incapable of grasping what being a professional is all about.

The players were never coached properly. Our youth system stinks. Is it any wonder that anyone produced locally in the last 10 years just isn't good enough.

Um, I don't think he was fired. It sounds like he resigned of his own volition. News24 have got their story all mixed up as usual. Although who knows what really happened? but it is not how the other outlets are reporting it.

Exactly... look at the stories that revolved around the leaving of the previous coach.

Fired/ resignation. Same kinda thing. Good news I think. Sure, the players have to take their share of the blame - but even given the scant quality at his disposal, some of his tactical decisions were terrible. Like hardly ever playing any strikers

It's all SAFA! I blame them! money is pumped into the sport for all the wrong reasons... why do you think of all our sporting glory in the cricket and rugby the banana banana can't play... fire the entire SAFA board! Hell I'll probably do better than these lot :D

we don't have any... didn't you see all the news report about no decent SA strikers and the only one capable of scoring doesn't want anything to do with SA?

Yeah, perhaps we should get a coach who has mastered the English language. Must be hard to coach via a translator

People! Bafana2 has never played this well in years! we actaly won some games this year! now they are fireing the guy? IDIOTS!

Yeah, let's see how many more coaches we can go through before the World Cup. As long as we can find a coach ... what ... three days before our opening fixture it should give us enough time to build.

When you've had the number of coaches we have since 1994, it's easy to spot the pattern...

....the coach is NOT the problem, it's the players.

duh

flamengo were pretty happy to get rid of him too... so no surprise he didnt last here

did alright in the confed cup though
