Currently I am on the 5GB package with saol.com @ R 299,00. I have monitored my usage and I am not near that usage lately. So I decided I will move to prepaid where at least unused data gets carried over (so if my telkom line is down again I don't lose out on my internet part as well). So to make my life easier and willing to stay with SAOL I asked them about the proccess to move to prepaid

Here is there answer

Dear Sir

With regards to downgrading your account to a prepaid account, there will be a once off charge of R 200.00 for downgrades.

If this is acceptable, we can downgrade your account to prepaid effective from the 1st July 2008. Your first gig will be R 85.00, thereafter you can topup your account when you need more bandwidth.

Please feel free to contact me should you have any queries.

twits why should I pay R 200 buy then 1 gig for 85 and I know I use more as one gig a month so I need to buy at least another gig if not 2. So downgrading with saol is going to set me back

R200 (downgrade + R 85 (1st gig) + R69,00 (another gig) = R354 for 2 Gigabytes while I can give them a months notice and pay my R299,00 and have 5 gigs to burn through

Needless to say I just gave them a months notice and I won't take there prepaid package either

Short sighted greedy twits

While I don't like charging for a downgrade...

How should they know how much data you plan to use? They gave you the costs, it's up to you to decide what to do. For all they know, you want to downgrade to prepaid because you're only going to be here one week a month...

Calling them 'short sighted greedy twits' seems a bit unfair.

We live in a free country that is my opinion

If I was even on a 1 or 2 gig account currently it would have cost me even more to downgrade as what I would be paying.

Basically it is ridiculus to charge for a downgrade, when if I resign and then sign up agian it will cost me a lot less(in this case they even loosing a customer)

why would they charge for a downgrade?

you could just cancel and sign up again for free

sounds dodge to me

That is actually so true! Cybersmart has the same! cause soal.com is the sitersite of cybersmart.co.za I'm guessing the same guys set these stupid "terms" You could just cancel and just sign up again and save you R200.

Why should they charge you at all? I cancelled an ADSL account about ten days ago and the cancellation's going to be effective tomorrow. Why can't SAOL do the same regarding downgrades? They are short sighted as now they lose his business totally.

Agreed.

Um, I don't wanna know what kind of logic that is...

Why do they have to know how much data he wants to use? He will decide what to do. Why does it matter how long he is here for, he pays his money and gets his bandwidth, their only concern should be getting his money.

They are short sighted because they now loose ALL his business (because of greed for R200). To boot they now have (yet another) a bad thread linked with their name.

I guess you are not a business women/entrepeneur.

I was reading this and thinking WTF SAOL. How the hell do they charge for "downgrade". Probably catch noobs with tactics like this!

After I put my notice in I now suddenly get the offer of downgrading without costs. Sorry but to late they should have thought of that before. There are plenty of other fish in the sea. I don't need SAOL but hopefuly they learnt a lesson and scrap that policy now

I also subscribe to SAOL and I had the exact same argument.
When I queried it by e-mail this is the reply I received:

The reason that we charge a downgrade fee because it is a loss to us for a client to downgrade. We are offering all our packages especially our ADSL packages at a very low price. But our directors are flexible and if you really cannot afford to pay the downgrade they will be able to waiver it.

There was a lot more that was discussed but at the end of the day I was quite happy with the outcome. You can make what you want of it, but I have always found SAOL to be a great provider to deal with.

Hey, lay off the insults.

As I said, I don't agree with charging for downloads.

His particular complaint was that it was going to cost more because he had to pay for downgrades, then pay for another 2 gigs and why would they suggest that to him! I was just trying to point out that they can't know what his intended usage is - for someone who wants to downgrade because (as an example!) they're in and out of the country a lot, it might not be such a waste of money - even though I don't agree with charging for downgrading (see, I'm repeating it to make sure you get it) - in a different situation it might still make more sense than it does for the OP.

I've been with SAOL for about 2yrs on the 5gb.

Not had any hassles to be honest. When I've needed support (twice to exact) they ahve been quite good.

That said Moklet, you should sent this query to someone higher up with your reasoning. I am sure that they would sit up at this and realise the problem.

Crumbs, they may even offer you something for your efforts to bring this to their attention. I mean I would if I was in management there.

Is this the same ISP that "doesn't" allow you to use another ISP account? :D

Edit: Wait, I'm sure it isn't. I can't seem to remember who that was.

Anyway, downgrade fees are ridiculous. Just another way of (_O_).

I so agree :D

Sorry if it was insulting.

But I still have no clue what you are talking about. I'm sure he is willing to give them a month notice and then switch to prepaid the next month, his problem is PURELY with the downgrade fee. So now he is ending the contract, and going to another provider and they loose any future profit they might have made from him with their idiotic telkomesq downgrade fee and they get a bad post on their name here to boot due to their shortsightedness. Poor business practice according to me.

Do you see my reasoning? And would you please kindly lay yours out for me in a different manner since I don't get what you are saying?
