a family relative needs access to the internet (for email purposes) and i found this as the best option ADSL 384k 3 Gig All-in-1 with 50 Gig Free Local Bandwidth, found here http://www.saol.com/adsl16.php

now my question.....does your email come off the local or international capping (when downloading your email)?

also, has anyone had bad service with their uncapped package, found here http://www.saol.com/adsl20.php

If you plan to use the 50GB local bandwidth then it's worth it. If not, then this is not the cheapest package, and certainly not worth the hassle of migrating your line to SAOL.

package cost - 384k line rental
= R249 - R151
= R98 for 3GB
= R32.66 per GB.

Afrihost is selling blended bandwidth for R29 per GB, and have a special running where you can topup your account at R14.50 per GB. So keep your 384k line with Telkom, and buy Afrihost bandwidth (1GB), and topup with another 2GB at an additional R29.

There's local (only) bandwidth, and there's blended bandwidth (local + international combined). All downloads, whether locally based or internationally based, will first deplete your blended cap, thereafter local downloads will deplete your local cap, and interntational downloads won't work at all. That's why most people find the local-only cap quite useless. But if your only purpose is for email, and your email account is hosted locally, then local-only bandwidth is fine. But their are no decent free email services in South Africa. Everyone uses Gmail, which is hosted overseas. So again, local-only bandwidth becomes useless.

Advice: please don't use the email account provided by your ISP. e.g. [email protected]. You will regret it one day when either SAOL piss you off, or you no longer want to use them for whatever reason, but you will be stuck with them because you need your stupid email address that everyone now has. So get a Gmail account, and keep it for life, without paying a cent (unless of course he has a work email account).

I am currently on this package. It's awesome. Currently downloading torrents at 39kbps. No problems so far. Great service from SAOL. I would recommend this to anyone. This package is a limited special though, which ends tomorrow. So you better sign up very quickly to lock yourself in. After tomorrow they won't be accepting new registrations. It's the cheapest 384K uncapped package available, and also the most stable.
