SAP (the ERP) queries

The first question is not module specific:

A SAP user gave me this explanation but it does not make sense to me.

I have the SAP GUI installed on my PC, with it I access various SAP servers in other countries.
I'm looking at a server in South America, on certain master data fields, e.g. profit centre description or cost element description the fields are blank or appear that they have not been maintained.
The SAP user says it has got something to do with the fact that my GUI is for English while their data or GUI is in their local language and when the local users access this master data the fields are populated but in their local language. The same happens when I run CO reports (cost centre reports), my cost centres have no description, while according to the user (who is not in South America) the reports are fine when executed there.

Any thoughts on this?

This could be possible. Allot of the SAP tables contain language specific data ie. English and German description. It might be that the default implementation is Spanish and they have been maintaining and updating their system in that language. When you access the system via your GUI it cannot find the English translations for certain text as your GUI is set to Eng.

Hi there. This question would be better answered on the SAP community network. Www.scn.sap.com
That being said, most systems are set up for unicode conversion and should be able to render any language. The issue comes with languages which have special characters like mandarin, German, etc. Spanish I believe doesn't have those types of characters and should render correctly. To change the language and test this click on the specific box in your SAP logon pad and in the system settings last screen the language is defined.

Yes as wentworth says, try to change your default language settings in the GUI and that might resolve your issues. Have google translate nearby for reference when you get stuck.

Thanks for the help wentworth & acidman, I'm not that hot on the GUI and am battling to find where I would change this.
Attached please find a capture of options available (hope pic shows).

I did try multilingual settings skimread, specifically "local text", but no luck:

I'm just guessing here

Second last screenshot always use this language. Select from the dropdown.
Log off and login.
If it doesn't work.
Last screenshot Local texts. Use Logon Language should be clicked.
First screenshot top right corner. Change language to Spanish
Log off and login.

Don't you have the "Language" option when you login ? As in, right below where you type your password.... the problem of course is, then everything (including menus etc ) will be in Spanish/German etc.

I do know however in the backend , i.e. if you use transactions SQ02/SQ03/SE16 to build queries directly on the tables, there is almost always a column in any of the "text" tables called "SPRAS" which you must filter to your specific language. English is obviously "EN" , i believe German (which is always there) is "DE" etc etc

Ok, thanks for all the replies.
When I select ES (Spanish) in Capture3 above I get some master data so that helps somewhat.
I have asked for access to SE16 and once I get that it will help.

Thanks again!

Next question if I may.
More for CO (Controlling) users.
Oh yes, it was mentioned, I have tried SCN before and found that it is mostly frequented by SAP consultants who resolve issues via programming & back end transactions which I have no access or clue about... (But I will post this query there as well)

I want to allocate support cost centre costs to production cost centre costs, in the past I've used Assessment (transaction KSUB for Plan) which posts to secondary cost elements in CO only.
But now I have some programmed reporting that only picks up FI transactions in which I would like to record these allocations.

Is anybody aware of a CO allocation transaction that also posts to FI and not only CO? What exactly does KSP4 - Overhead, KSVB - Distribution & KSCB - Indirect Activity Allocation do?

Thanks
