I dont want to be cynical, but what exactly would they be loading in the double cab bin? It's not practical, will they be loading bricks part-time or storing arms, leisure, will they be entering those high risk environments with member in the bin(which defeats the purpose)?

This give a credence to @elf_lord_ZC5 view that they are as least partly status vehicles.

They load some of the stuff recovered. Many years ago, my house was broken into and stuff stolen. The forensic tech came later in a DC with her equipment in the load bin.

What other utility vehicle can be used in rugged terrain? SUVs are relatively more expensive.

I doubt they will be loading recovered fridges, but let's say maybe some illegal mining implements, fair enough, but police do have trucks that do that work.

If they requested a canopy it would make sense, or even a storage box, the only tools they would need is firearms and tactical gear of which they already holding and wearing.

SUV pricing is most likely a factor yes. But the main reason I think is that they plan on retro fitting this armour to existing vehicles in the fleet. If you read the tender requirements in the articles it definitely sounds that way.

They already have a rather large fleet of these double cab bakkies. Keeps things relatively standard when it comes to having them serviced etc as well at police garages.

You will also find upgrading the suspension to compensate for the added weight is significantly more complex and expensive on most SUVs compared to bakkied with leaf spring rear ends and relatively simply wishbone front suspension.
