The South African Police Service (SAPS) has issued a tender bid document for the armouring of several models of double cab bakkies, notably Ford double cabs and the Volkswagen Amarok double cab. Bidders seeking to compete must conduct conversion to Ballistic Level B6 or better. The SAPS will provide vehicles to be converted as and when needed, with the contract set for two years.

Vehicles require Level B6 ballistic protection against 7.62×39 mm full metal jacket (FMJ) rounds at 10 metres, and 7.62×51 mm rounds. Further, the armour must be upgradeable to STANAG Level I on all vertical sides. Vehicles must retain their standard factory appearance, with armouring concealed and discreet.

It is said to be an acquisition by the anti-gang unit (AGU). This is not the only tender, the police also tendered to replace their 'troop' carriers.

EDIT: I don't think it is to replace, but to add.

SAPS looking for a new APC

The South African Police Service (SAPS) recently issued a tender for a new armoured troop carrier, fitted with Mobile Adjustable Rescue/Assault System (MARS) to transport 12 members, including driver and co-driver, through various danger zones.

The mid-August tender specified that the vehicle should have an ergo-metric internal height of minimum 1.8 m, not exceeding 2 m.

The vehicle shell must be a monohull and be powered by an engine with a minimum displacement of 6.5 litres and minimum output of 240 hp. The gearbox must be fully automatic 6-speed. Further, power steering, permanent 4×4 mobility and a top speed of 120 km/h is specified, with fuel capacity to allow for minimum 600 km range.

Other possiblity is the SAPS is preparing for Civil War? :(

they've been eyeing the eye-watering prices of modern double cabs, this tenda could cost more than the damn arms deal

if it ends up being some basic Tata or GWM then maybe it is not just a money grab ... maybe

for taxi bosses although I understand they prefer white Fortuners, but bullet proofed is a poriority.

An armoured double cab with B6 level protection will cost around R2. 5 million, for a used vehicle.

Total waste of money. They could get body cameras, better training, education, fix the police stations.

Government is excellent at wasted spending

Lots of political types feel they need to be protected, because there are some bad arse types, that do not appreciate the sins they commit against their fellows.
