SARS E-Filing 2019 OPEN!

So my update

Filed 01/08/19
Selected for verification 01/08/19
Submitted supporting docs 05/08/19
Verification complete* 01/09/19
Refund received** 04/09/19

* I didn't receive any direct communication that my verification was complete on my SARS efiling profile or my selected channels, but somehow TaxTim managed to update it because SARS issued an additional assessment that completely disallowed my out of pocket medical expenses (which I'm going to object since I met all the criteria and submitted all the invoices and POP from the relevant medical practitioner). It's strange because it looks like whoever was verifying my tax return didn't even look at my supporting documentation, my additional assessment only takes into account information SARS already had (irp5, it3(x), medical aid certificate and RA certificates) despite me submitting the relevant info. I also never received a call or request to supply additional info or confirm anything. So yup, I'm definitely following that up.

As a positive (?) verification was done in less than the 21 business days it usually takes (I get selected for verification every year, without fail but have never had an adjusted assessment until now).

** Refund took less than 7 working days to appear as well, so that's another positive to SARS considering it was quite sizeable.

Once it fully clears I'm going to lodge my complaint and get the couple of grand SARS still owes me.

Good luck to everybody still waiting!
Your soooo lucky. Every year I have to wait for over 2-4 months before I get a refund. Funny this year SARS requested an employers letter to state my job description. I’ve been doing the same work for over 10 years. Guess it is just tactics to delay my refund.

I have a (jokey) conspiracy theory that the auditors/verifiers are incentivised to reduce or delay refunds as much as possible. And that's saying a lot because I'm simply not a fan of conspiracy theorists.

Maybe the incentive is not direct but more "performance based" but there's just no reason a verification should take longer than a calender month (21 business days) or a refund should take longer than ten (7 business) days to reflect. I don't worry within that time frame (I never understand why people whine about not receiving their refund when the prescribed time line hasn't even lapsed) but once we hit those time limits I would be raising all kinds of questions. And I honestly can't imagine why your job description has any bearing on a legitimate refund...

So so true

Anyone with some advice.

Date of assessment: 2019-07-31
Year of assessment: 2018
Type of assessment: Original Assessment
Period (days): 365
Payment Due date: 2019-08-31

I have been selected for verification, I submitted the documents on 2019-07-31. I received a confirmation letter that the documents has been submitted. I have not heard any else. I did log a "Query Status" on eFiling but also, nothing back.

What should I do?

Same thing happens with my wife last year. They eventually finished the review in March this year. No amount of querying made any difference.

Send your tax ref number to [email protected]. I will get an update for you.

I filed on the 01/10/2019. And wasn't selected for audit. No movement since.

Filed 6 weeks ago and the refund was finally approved today. SARS is an absolute shambles, but at least I'm getting something back for the first time in 15 years.

Anyone know when I can expect refund payment? *momma needs new sparklies*
Are you being audited? An audit process can take up to 90 working days. And also please note that the 16th December to 15th January are not considered working days according to the Tax Act.

my tax guy says they may take four weeks... I was wondering what the experience here has been
Everybody would have a different experience given different circumstances, but if the turnaround time has elapsed, I can look into it for you. When did you submit your return? Or rather, when did you submit supporting documents if any were requested?

During the 2019 assessment period I've contributed too much money towards my retirement. This resulted in an amount of R 26555 being carried-over.
I would like to top-up my retirement annuity for the 2020 assessment period to fully utilize the 27.5% deduction threshold.

Should I subtract the carried forward amount from the top-up amount or can I ignore it and pay the full 27.5% towards the annuity? :)
