SARS still using Flash Player despite security risks

That's probably why they like using Flash it's made by AdoBEE.

What is really astonishing........

That news interview happened more than 2 years ago.
According to the interview, SARS already knew that Adobe Flash will be discontinued in 2020. In the interview they spoke about a cost of R1 bil to upgrade the SARS IT systems and I guess this includes doing away with Adobe Flash.
Today, we know that SARS have done NOTHING to e-filing because Adobe Flash is still there.
There should be an investigation done, so that we can know if any money was spent on SARS IT upgrades and if any money was spent on doing away with Adobe Flash.

I am aware of another governmental organization that uses Flash, that has actively taken steps to ensure their systems still use Flash and that it cannot be removed. Their operations come to a standstill without it.
DHA?

I think you guys underestimate the damage done by Tom Moyane

No most of their systems were taken over by SARS more than a decade ago because SARS was still operational back then. Things collapsed pretty quickly when the zuptas got hold of SARS though.

24 January 2021 - Release of the SARS Browser

SARS apologises for the inconvenience and service disruption caused by the discontinuance of the Adobe Flash player. We are pleased to inform you that a SARS Browser solution has been implemented enabling you to complete and submit the Flash-based forms not migrated to HTML5 yet.

The SARS Browser enables access to ALL eFiling forms, including those that require Adobe Flash, thus maintaining compliance with your filing obligations. Click here to download the SARS Browser. To see our easy steps on how to download the browser, click here.

In an interview with 702’s The Money Show, Intikhab Shaik, head of technology and solutions delivery at SARS, told Bruce Whitfield that SARS did not expect Adobe would “actually block” Flash Player from working. This happened on 12 January
2021.

Seriously? They are going to say that with a straight face?

There are many comments I could make about their head of technology if that is actually what he thought and worked with as a plan but I shall just hold my tongue.

Hmm. If you clicked the link and read the notice/FAQ sent by Adobe, it quite clearly states Flash will be disabled after 12 Jan. I saw it and I'm not even in the business, let alone the head of IT at SARS. Anyway, eFiling is a dog's breakfast as it is. There is just so much functionality you would expect to be there that is missing.

Functionality they cannot introduce, because Flash is not suitable?

And now a moot point anyhow, as Flash is Foobar.

In spite of my fed-upedness with SARS in general and the Adobe Flash issue specifically, I needed to get my 2020 return in by this Friday (provisional taxpayer, grrr...). I used the 21 Jan instructions in this link Friday: https://www.sars.gov.za/ClientSegme...x/Pages/eFiling-Compatibility-Guidelines.aspx
I didn't encounter any issues with filing, but SARS wants some supporting documents before they will give me my refund. My HP Officejet 6313 which I have only used as a scanner for several years, needs Flash. I wonder if I can ask SARS for a work-around, seeing they appear to be experts in drawing the last breath of life from Flash?

Install an app and scan with your phone? E.g. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.office.officelens&hl=en_ZA&gl=US
