SARS targets bank accounts

Yes - once they've done the ones on the income tax register they'll go after the ones on the PAYE database that never registered to submit their income tax returns.

Ok so how do I go about doing said tax returns?

About 5 years ago, I owed them something like R18.00, and they sent my nasty letters about if I didn't pay it I would be taken to court and blah blah.

I got all the small change I could find and went to their payment offices and gave them a pile of 5 cent coins. Bastages

:rolleyes: And yet when you're owed money by them you would want it ASAP?

Are you a first-time tax payer?

You need to register as a tax payer in order to get a tax number. Please complete the IT 77 form, then visit your nearest SARS branch and hand it in together with:

• A certified copy of your Identification Document or Passport (drivers licences are not accepted);
• Your bank details: either a cancelled cheque or a certified/original copy of your account statement or an original letter from the bank confirming your bank details;
• Income details for the last 3 years e.g. copies of IRP5 etc;
• Proof of residence e.g. your rates/electricity bill.

You may also fax or email the documents to the branches. See our list of SARS branches to locate the branch nearest to you. Please phone the branch first to confirm your documentation and their email address/fax number before submitting or visiting the branch.

Once you have been registered and given your tax number, you can then register on www.sarsefiling.co.za as a tax payer and fill out your returns online.

IT77 form is on the website.

When are SARS going to target the people who should be paying tax, but choose to operate in cash?

When are SARS going to target the people who should be paying tax, but choose to operate in cash?
If the business is all cash, money is not going into bank accounts and there are no assets that are clearly beyond their means it is very difficult. If it is someone being paid cash by a formal tax-paying business, then those people do usually now get taxed automatically. If it's a case of something like tips, then that money is essentially under the table and not easy to trace. Not something that is unique to South Africa either.
