I did not know he could be suspended, I thought only Parliament could remove him...

Edit: Another article, with more context: https://www.businesslive.co.za/bd/national/2018-03-19-breaking-news-tom-moyane-suspended/

Business Day understands that Ramaphosa asked Moyane to resign on Sunday night, but Moyane said he would not do so citing the upcoming revenue results announcement.

According to sources canvassed by the Business Day, Moyane intended using the results announcement to show his success as commissioner despite the tough economic climate.

Pressure has been building for Moyane to quit. Factors include a R48bn hole in revenue collection and his leadership and handling of the allegations against his second-in-charge, Jonas Makwakwa, which has come under increased scrutiny by Parliament's standing committee on finance.

This comes on the cusp of an announcement by Moody's on Friday on whether SA's investment status would be downgraded.

Quite a good opinion article in Daily Maverick about the damage done by Moyane at SARS: https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/art...e-of-state-captures-most-loyal-foot-soldiers/

The suspension by President Cyril Ramaphosa of SARS Commissioner Tom Moyane on Monday night brings to an end a 42-months’ long reign of terror which not only saw the haemorrhaging of skilled staff and the relentless persecution of senior executives, including former finance minister Pravin Gordhan, but also the reduction of the once-formidable revenue service to a hollow shell. Under Moyane, one of Jacob Zuma’s most loyal pawns, SARS became a key and vital player of the State Capture project.

...

This is huge. Tom has been an important part of state capture.

Definitely. On 702 yesterday they mentioned that there was news -- or rumours -- that CR had asked him to step down on Sunday night. Just had not thought that CR would act this quickly. Good for him.

No idea who the new acting lad is. But quite certain that he will not be an acolyte of the old tyranny.

Mark Kingon appointed as acting SARS commissioner

Mark Kingon has been appointed the new acting commissioner for the South African Revenue Service (SARS), the Treasury announced on Tuesday morning.

This follows the suspension with immediate effect by President Cyril Ramaphosa of current commissioner Tom Moyane on Monday night.

Kingon stepped into the role of second in charge in an acting capacity at SARS last week when chief officer for business and individual taxes Jonas Makwakwa resigned.

Mark Kingon ..... potentially another implicated person?

Pauw goes on to explain that the tax query from the auditor in Durban caused "a minor consternation" at the SARS head office. The auditor escalated it to SARS audit boss Jonas Makwakwa, who, in turn, reported it to Oupa Magashula, then the commissioner.

The case was transferred to a member of the VIP Tax Unit‚ Mark Kingon — and from there it seems‚ nothing ever happened.

Was Kingon told to investigate and found himself suddenly caught up in a political nightmare? Did he ever finalise the probe? To whom did he present his findings and what did that person do?
