SARS workers to strike

South African Revenue Service workers plan to strike early next month after wage talks reached an impasse, the Public Servants' Association (PSA) said on Thursday.

PSA deputy general manager Manie de Clercq said the union notified SARS on Thursday of its intention to down tools after the tax collector refused to budge on a 7% across the board wage increase. The PSA is demanding a 12,8% pay hike.

"Strike action by SARS employees will dramatically impact on the effective gathering of income for the state and even international trade, as customs officers will form an integral part of the imminent action," De Clercq said.

I guess many people would not actually mind this.

Funny thing that Municipal workers got 13% but SARS only offers 7%. The more incompetent you are the more you are rewarded?

Ja man, they should strike untill they get what they want. But seeing as they do such important work for the country maybe they should get some added benefits?

They should ask for at least 50% increase! hehehe, that'll keep them striking.:D

Seems like striking is to be the norm if you are unhappy. I do not see any value of placing the hold country to a halt while the negotiations take place. In the end, you will be hurting yourself and everyone else.

The problem with public institutions like SARS, Police, municipalities, etc. are that everyone gets the same increase irrespective of their level of performance. This keeps the useless workers in and demotivates good workers.

Jack Welch a CEO of General Electric had a policy where they used to richly reward the top 20% of employees while the worst-performing 10% were fired. We really need this in SA public service.

Doesn't the percentage relate to what the worker is currently earning?

i used to work for SARS.........26 years in factual act. we would threaten to strike almost every year for this increase. same ole same ole give us crumbs while inflation was above the increase they wanted to give. funny thing is that the employees have the upper hand 'cos there are 2 most critical days that were always held in front of the employer as a huge threat.
7th of the month - PAYE for employers to submit monies deducted from their employees and
25th of the month - VAT
who had the last laugh.
employees always won when those dates came up.
