SA's best Telecoms provider and ISP revealed

In the Internet Service Provider (ISP) category Telkom Internet won by a large margin, followed by MWEB, Neotel, @lantic and iBurst.

Spindoctors salaries being justified I see. IMO clearly show that there are still way too many uneducated internet consumers in SA.

The only surprise here is that the yellow people featured so high up on the list. After extensive dealings with Virgin, however, it's no surprise where they ended up. Perhaps someone should let Sir Richard know :-)

Probably the best ISP service I've had was with afrihost.
 
Just shows you, the guys with the biggest marketing budget gets the most votes.
 
Actually, I'm a small business user and use Telkom as ISP, since the start of DSL in SA. Have never had a hassle or issue. Only once ever did I call their help desk to ask if there was DNS problem, and it was already resolved by the time I spoke to an agent. I am not a Telkom shareholder, supplier or employee. Guess I must be a lemming then.
 
Yeah the rating are totally warped.
How can Telkom Internet be the best ISP - In my book they near the bottom - expensive, worst support, no nice packages and nothing special how on earth can they come first I don't think they even have a uncapped option.
Was this just drawn out of a hat?
 
I guess it also comes down to each persons use of the internet, and what they class as "good service". Then also, any survey is only as good as the questions being asked, it can easily skew a result in one direction or the other.
 
The stats are clearly based on consumers not knowing of choice.
Always the large brands is the first thing that comes into peoples heads.
 
Its sad to see how people rate Telkom so highly - how blissfully unaware they are of how they're being ripped off and that South Africa's internet is among the most expensive and slowest services in the world. I wish people would get educated in these matters because their stupidity is what drives Telkom and allows them to maintain things the way they are, and as a result everyone suffers. What do people who rate Telkom Internet highly base this opinion on? What have they compared it to? Its unfortunate that half of the country is ignorantly sitting around using their IE6 browsers on their DO1 packages to check their telkomsa email accounts and think they're getting world-class service!

No, they don't have uncapped. Why get one when so many ignorant people love them and will pay them per-GB?

Not everyone's needs are the same. Uncapped might be fine for home users or people who can tolerate widely varying performance/throughput. Contention ratios are very high and performance is very erratic on so-called uncapped services, and in our experience this was not suitable for daily business use. I'm not knocking uncapped, and indeed recommend it for most home users. Also, we use our own pop and smtp servers, and this isn't easily accomplished with several uncapped services. Simply trying to point out that not everyone's needs are like yours. Yes, we can do with more bandwidth and more performance and lower prices.
 
Unless we talking International ISP then I think the term Best my be a bit redundant.

I am also a Telkom Internet user and I am happy with my service. Use both international and local data they provide (39GB in total) with no hassles what so ever. Full line speed with low contention ratios... R554 pm DSL access included. Uncapped will cost me in the region of R800... R300 more a month is alot. Oh and I am on a 10mbps DSL access

I also use my own pop and smtp servers. what has your isp got yo do with it? As long as you can get connected to the net you can make use of any pop and smtp servers. I have been with 8 isp's over the past 4 years, currently using mweb uncapped and still make use of my own mail server located in california.
 
I love the way Monochoice shows up in the top lot as well. Their support staff is about as intellectual as Pond Life. Pathetic...wonder who fills in these surveys ...most likely Juli-ass.
