SA's call centre industry 'set for a boom'

London-based market analysis firm Datamonitor expects the number of call centre agent positions in South Africa, which is favoured by British companies for its cultural affinity with Europe, to more than triple by 2010.

Pah, bah and humbug! ...ok, I'm just a leeetle biased from having been through callcentre hell since Sunday last week. But, to be fair, for all that the majority of the species I had to deal with at Virgin are largely braindead they ARE at least intelligible - something to which the frontline grunts populating CellC's frontline can't claim. The misery and frustration of having to try making out what that lot are saying is something I just couldn't take anymore, so I jumped ship!
The number ONE thing 'they' (CellC damagement) don't get is, notwithstanding anything else, callers to your service HAVE TO be able to understand what your people are saying to them. This means lose the mumblers, the rumblers (as in deep, indistinct voices) and the ones with accents so thick you can use them as a weapon to bludgeon someone. Put another way, between their higher pitched voices that are so much clearer over the phone and their naturally better conversational skillset, this is a job a lot more suited to women than men.
