SA's e-commerce sector gears for consolidation

Local online shops really need to expand their range and not just offer items you can get in a walk store.

Take2 did this right a while with their Amazon import service.

When I shop online, most of the time I want items not available in ZA.
 
The most shocking issue I find with local online stores is the surprising amount of them that don't have any SSL encryption whatsoever on their website. Most tech-savvy people will not touch an online store with a barge pole if there is no SSL.

I have been buying online at least twice a month for the past gazillion years and I've never come across a ZA site without SSL? Do you have some examples?

Yeah I also thought his comment was weird. Haven't seen it either.
 
There's normally only ssl on the credit card payment gateway. Unless of course you don't want people to see what you're shopping for...

There should be ssl for login pages too. Your password needs to be encrypted over the wire. None of these sites have any ssl encryption for their login pages which is completely unacceptable.
 
To be honest though those are fly by night shops that I've never personally heard of and I bet most people here haven't either.

They probably aren't primarily online business and only offer it as a secondary option to their existing brick & mortar alternatives...read designed by n00bs at low cost.

Sure, but that's exactly my point. A lot of South African retailers are making fundamental mistakes when selling online.
 
Biggest problem for me is delivery time. I hate having to wait 3 weeks for some stuff.
Credit card security - a really just want all the online shops to implement Verified by VISA (and whatever the Mastercard one us). In fact banks should penalise shops for not using it.

I've only ever seen 3weeks on imported stuff. Items in SA take max 1 week.

When importing an item, I don't mind waiting a bit.

Or if it should be manufactured. Admittedly it doesn't happen that often, but when it does it sucks.

I can say the same for just about any country though.

It's not a South African problem it's an Internet problem.

Same kind of thing that you find in the more rural old school zones where they think it's perfectly acceptable to make a photo copy of your credit card and keep it in a filing cabinet.
