SA's top streaming music picks

Simfy definitely need to work in their software.

If you search under genre radio it plays the same songs over and over...strange seeing as they have millions of songs on offer.

They must fix their algorithm.

Definitely. I tried Simfy for ~2 months, but they just aren't good enough in terms of music exploration (radio / recommendations).

Been using these guys now for about a week; due to Afrihost Plus; & it's fairly decent. Glad to have a decent selection of local artist & offline functionality works well. iOS Apps run good as well...a 7/10 so far

I tried to use it, but Deezer is just better.

Agreed. Although Deezer on the iPad has a horrible bug/lousy functionality where it would start to buffer and then when your internet hits a snag (even just for a second) it just stops playing. It doesn't try to go to the next song or try to load the rest of the buffer - it just stops. I can actually skip to the next song and it will immediately start to play, so not sure what's up.

With our great internet in SA this means that it stops playing all the time. Seems as if the iPhone is better (it either continues to load the buffer when the internet picks up again or actually skips to the next song) so not sure if it is a bug on the iPad?

Or sync the albums to your device and not worry about streaming at all.

Kinda defeats the purpose of a streaming music service?

I do that for my common playlists. But discovering new music or using flow or playing other albums once or twice to check it out defeats the purpose of syncing it first.

Their radio randomisation system sucks... it's pathetic actually. Music selection is great though, so I don't mind paying the R60 a month, but waiting for a decent update.
The matix here we come :D
Whoops... I blame predictive text.

Send them a bug report. You can also tune the mobile quality to 128kbps. Their 320kbps mp3's will buffer more on a slow connection then Simfy's 192kbps.

There Deezer's here this view is great. The recommendations is good. For the same price definitely give it a test.

Thanks, I'll check Deezer out. Does it have complete SA support? i.e no VPN's required?

You can give deezer a try just get any vodacom number and you get the first month free. Nice to test it out. If you want to keep it they will charge you R60 to your airtime. So if you can get airtime for cheap this might be a better way to pay for deezer sub and it is prepaid if you use it on a prepaid sim.

I like music streaming services a lot. Simfy is nice it has charts and nice selections. Their pc software is not bad. Their radio function is HORRIBLE.
Deezer got decent selection of music. Horrible software but the browser version makes up for it but not ideal. Okayish radio.
Rdio has THE best genre based radio option.

Ideal situation would be if I can have simfy with rdio's radio then it would be the best streaming solution there is.

All and all I think SA got a great selection of streaming services available actually and all of the top class. Deezer,Simfy and Rdio are the main ones and they are good.

Thanks for this Cavedog!

Grooveshark's radio was awesome. Love Simfy, but as you say the radio function is utter kark - and most of the time I'm looking for genre related music.
