I've been checking out Greg's Cable Map (really nice site by the way) and noticed SAT-2 has a pathetic capacity.

I am curious, probably due to boredom ;) Any know much about it? I am curios whether it is still running? Can this cable still be economically viable? And further, what do they do with these obsolete cables, let them rot on the sea bed?

Probably where Telkom stuck all the recent Seacom users looking for redundancy :p

SAT-2 is still in service as far as I'm aware. It's fully utilised and has probably paid for itself a few times over by now.
I don't think they recover decommissioned cables, cost would be to great.

When they say capacity is 15360 channels assume each channel is 64kb/s (the requirement of a single voice circuit) so you can do 15360x64kb/s to get the total capacity.

I hate to be a spelling Nazi, but the word is "curious". :) Curios are those wooden giraffe statues you buy next to the road ;)

wow awesome site, I always thought that South Africa was connected to only 2 cables lo, now I see that there are 8 :wtf:

I think the reason SAT-2 has such pathetic capacity is due to either the era it was made or South Africa just didn't require huge cables at the time.

So they probably using it for voice calls then? Makes sense, forgot people phoned each other :p

That, planning started in the late 80's.

It's digital so can be used for anything. 64kb/s is an easy reference in the telecoms field as it's the lowest common denominator. It could carry anything from voice, data to tv broadcasts.

Anyone notice that New Zealand doesn't have any major cables?!? :(

That map is not complete. NZ has cables going to the USA & Australia. Once they get to Australia they could hop onto many of their cables.

Try these:

not all the cables on that map are live yet, the 2 fat west coast ones especially....

here's a more accurate graphic, with estimated landing dates;

Note WACS and ACE is actually not in service as far as I have it yet. There is only 3 (4 if you count SAT-2) cables providing SA with international connectivity at the moment, SAT3, SAFE and Seacom. EASSY will be going live middle August 2010 as well.

And don't forget the satellite link via the Earth Station at Hartbeeshoek.... (yes, it is not a cable!!!)
