ADDITIONAL: Please note that the power reconfiguration on SAT3 maintenance is taking place on Saturday 6 February 2010 (0:01 to 04:00 UTC).
Restorable traffic is not at risk and we will still experience the longer traffic path. Only after successful power reconfiguration, all restored traffic can then be normalized back to their normal routes on SAT-3 and the system is back to normal. Tentative normalization scheduled for Sunday
7 February if power has been restored to normal configuration and no shunt is detected. No downtime expected as all our links are on restoration.

POINTS OF IMPACT:
Gallo Manor - Johannesburg
Great Westerford - Cape Town
International

OPENING TIME: 20 Jan 2010 5:29:27 PM
CAUSE OF PROBLEM: Telkom Maintenance
SYMPTOMS EXPERIENCED: High Latency
SEVERITY: Critical
STATUS: Attending
ATTENDING: Telkom Engineers
ADDITIONAL: Please note that Telkom SA is conducting major maintenance on the shunt fault on Segment 14 of SAT-3, about 627 km from the ACC Beach Manhole. This maintenance will run from the 20-22 January 2010 and resume again on the 29 January to 01 February 2010 within the maintenance window
(00:01 to 04:00 UCT). Due to this maintenance, there will be intermittent high latency to London UK and Paris for the duration of this maintenance.
The latter will take place during and after the maintenance window.

The following notice has been UPDATED.

TIME: 7 Feb 2010 1:38:15 PM
ADDITIONAL: Please note that power reconfiguration maintenance on SAT3 that was supposed to take place on Saturday 6 February 2010 (0:01 to 04:00
UTC) has been postponed.

Telkom has advised that power reconfiguration was unsuccessful.

Telkom will confirm a new maintenance date tomorrow afternoon after consultation with SAT3 devices product specialists, Alcatel.

At least this explains why international latency is still very high. I thought they completely screwed something up and I was just going to have to put up with double international latency.

omg this is killing me....:( I need my latency back to normal!!!! Anyone have an update at all yet?

Well they certainly must have some kind of huge issue with SAT3, as per the notice the power reconfigurations was unsuccessful.
During last year Telkom said that it would be increasing the capacity on SAT3 hugely with some type of new technology, I wonder if this is it and something has gone wrong?

hmmm interesting. Well I hope that's not the case :( Can you actually just imagine how much of a f***up that will be!! And of course Telkom will say nothing to let people know...

This is getting really flipping annoying now. Another night with very high international latency.
