SAT3 Bandwidth Costs under discussion

...and like the state secret, the cost of international bandwidth, kept out of way far under the sea.

when does the sat3 monopoly end? As it states in the article..

Hi Rendan

The monopoly expires in April 2007 (agreement signed April 2002 I think).

Thanks rpm..

So that means anyone can source international bandwidth from then? including the SNO with its access to all those cables (TATA)..
Theres hope yet!! atleast in april next year.,:)

Hi rpm

Does anyone have any clue what the expiration will mean for consumers? Are we going to see open access?

Hi Biltongguy

This is what is under discussion here, but I dont think mush is known about this. I have also heard that the agreement has been or may be extended...not confirmed though.

The minister has also mentioned Ănternational bw at cost', but then again we know how she changes her views...

Regards,

RPM

ok less than 1 yr. :/ contract extending is worrying.

If they extend this monopoly again they should be thrown in jail, period!

Extending this monopoly cannot be allowed to happen! There can be no valid reason for this from anyone especially Telkom.

If this does happen then I would suggest very harsh action from the public. Read into that what you will but by harsh action I mean something that will overturn any such decision.

Damn, now I'll have to go and make a new t-shirt

"My ISP calls me a bandwith hog"

Can we strangle them with said SAT-3 cable if they extend the momopoly?

Hog Hog Hogging!!

Good luck, will you be able to find out what kind of price they are currently paying for the bandwidth in comparison to what it would most likely be in the future when the monopoly is over? Telkom claims not to be overcharging the consumers but if the difference is not much and we see a rather dramatic price drop in Bandwidth, it would make for interesting times for Telkom.

Hi RPM,

Best of luck in the discussions - I truly hope you're able to open some minds to our plight regarding the high costs of international bandwidth.

Here's to keeping my fingers crossed April 2007 doesn't turn out to be an "April Fool's Joke" on us and the monopolies get an extention :(

The SAT3 workshop, hosted and supported by various organizations like the Association for Progressive Communications, AfrISPA and the Communications Regulators Association of Southern Africa, will look at various issues including possible regulatory approaches and perspectives from industry players and consumers.
-
The SAT3 workshop, which will mostly be attended by regulators and policy-makers, is hosted in Johannesburg and will run on the 24th and 25th of July.
Ya the secret is out - monopoly expires on SAT3 - so they were never really planning on doing anything - just stalling until said expiry.

What I would like to know - the other big secret (besides that other secret: shareholders of telkom) is - how can anybody discuss anything without knowing what the basic price is?

How much is a gig of international traffic - before shafting?

So in a nutshell, Its been suggested that the ISP's are happy with low usage users so they can milk us for more cash!!!, so we will likely not see affordable high cap accounts or unlimited accounts any time soon due to the corporate gears feeling greedy!.
