SAT3 declaration ‘unlikely in short-term'

Yep, note the total lack of urgency. Suppose it's the typical "africa" way of doing things, lets wait for something to happen, maybe it will, who knows.
 
bs - could have been done under the telecomms act with sufficient political will

no, nope and hopefully never altho any involvement in telecomms in this country be it as an operator, lawyer or whatever is by definition highly politicised

This kind of declaration is a complicated issue and considering that Telkom are stalling on giving the DoC the SAT3 shareholders agreement I am not surprised that they are not ready to make a declaration.
I would rather they take their time and get it right than rush the issue and we end up with something unworkable.
 
I've been sceptical about the whole LLU + Sat-3 change in attitude of DoC. I'm not sure if its just for show or actually them wanting to do something. If it does happen i won't be supprised if this is dragged out throughout this yr till either june or last quarter of this yr just in time for sno. ;) ie mik as long as possible, and then some with sno whilest keeping the public on tight string for as long as possible.
 
This country will forever be classified as third world with palookas like these running the comms dept.
 
The SAT-3 announcement will be kept dangling in front of our noses before the election. It is as effective as promising free Viagra to all impotent males provided that they can prove that they voted for the ANC in the upcoming election (erection?). After the elections the politicians will be too busy enriching themselves to be concerned about the hapless voters (for the next five years).
 
In an interview with ITWeb, Shope-Mafole acknowledged the EC Bill does state that on a date to be declared by the minister, a number of services including the SAT3 undersea cable would be declared essential resources.

However, she notes that there are other stakeholders in the SAT3 partnership who are not South African. The government can therefore not make the decision without first consulting with the other stakeholders, she says.

“The minister will consult with ministers of the other countries involved, who will in turn consult with the telecoms companies that invested in the project,” she says.

Connection Telecom co-founder Steve Davies also notes that Eassy has not yet been built.

“Waiting for that undersea cable to provide competition to SAT3 would effectively sentence SA to a status quo where Telkom charges an out-of-proportion price for its half of the international data link,” he says.

@pimal3 - That's been my main concern here. All these sudden potentially liberalising promises come to light just before the elections - what about the whole of last year when they could've have made these changes?

Just more election PR.
