No. In theory SATA has a faster throughput, but if you take two identical disks - one SATA and one IDE, the performance would be almost identical....

Heh sarcastic .. I wouldn't bank on that reasoning, SCSI is faster tech but it has never surpassed IDE in the desktop market. SATA is cheaper would be more of the reason.

SATA offers several compelling advantages over the older parallel ATA interface: reduced cable-bulk and cost (8 pins vs 40 pins), faster and more efficient data transfer, and the ability to remove or add devices while operating (hot swapping).

However, the difference between an IDE drive and a SATA drive is not noticeable.

Bottom line, cheaper to manufacture = greater profit/margins for manufacturers. If PATA had been continued to be developed as SATA had it would out-perform it today.
