Jimmy, R300 is fine IF:

It's in your shop, and I can walk out with it 5 minutes after I walk in,
I can buy the quantity I want,
you've got various models I can compare,
and I don't need to collect from the supplier.

That's what retailers do.They carry stock for quick delivery, break bulk, handle logistics and provide a place for the buyer to compare products or get advice. And most would charge a 30% mark-up, or R295. If you're only offering 1 out of 4 of those services, why should I still pay your full mark-up. I don't see why I should pay you when you're running an inefficient business. Most of the time the retailer offers no advice (or wrong advice), hasn't got stock, and generally provides no useful service at all.

Custom orders shouldn't be any different; your usual logistics chain is already in place. Emergency orders and personal delivery (why can't you use a courier?) add to the bill, but that's not what the OP was asking for. He wants a retailer with stock of the product, which you're obviously not. Don't get upset because you can't make a huge profit because someone else provided the customer with what he wanted, and you didn't.

As for Esquire, they provide us with what we want, at a fair price. I don't see why the retailer should make 30%, just for having an account with the supplier. If I'm doing the research, ordering the stock, arranging for delivery, and taking all the risk, I expect to pay what the retailer pays, not an extra 100% mark-up for services I don't want or didn't receive.

JtS, you are offering a niche market service, i.e. including personal delivery to customer. I don't know your business but it would appear that you do not have a walk-in retail outlet. For customers who are home or location bound (immobile for whatever reason) you have a good business model. You should advertise more as it could work out to be a lucrative market. Just don't add your pricing as you will be compared to normal retailers; like what has happened on this thread.

However, this does not give you the right to slag off other guys competing in the hardware industry. They have different business models and their cost structures are different to yours. If I work around the corner from a dealer/retailer, they will be my first stop due to the convenience of their location and not necessarily pricing. I won't travel 10km to save R50 on a purchase.

You also make assumptions that everyone buying at Esquire is using the MyBB vendor code - assumptions are dangerous. Many of us supplement our income by supplying IT components or full rigs and have registered CC's and VAT numbers, etc. Due to our low operating costs we can compete with the bigger guys but on a small scale.

Don't knock us. Stick to your captive market.

If you didn;t come right you can always buy mine ;)

Thanks! ;)

I did come right. Did my usual research online. Checked prices there. Checked delivery costs and delivery times. Checked out retail shops with walk in shops and their prices on their websites. Then once my research was done I popped into PC Zone and saw what they have to offer (they seem to favour 2.5" enclosures even though they don't stock these drives  ). I then popped into Matrix warehouse and they had the NexStar CX that I had seen, and liked, online. The price was a reasonable R249 incl. Not the cheapest I had seen in my research but it meant immediate possession and not having to wait for delivery.

Now back to the topic of markups, why should I be satisfied with huge markups when the shop in question merely provided the facility for me to pick up what I wanted? I did not require any assistance in any of those shops as I knew what I wanted. In fact I often find, as a result of my prior research, that I know more than the shops assistants about what I need. I grabbed the enclosure, paid and was out of there within 5 minutes of entering...
