What is the Story with Satelite Connectivity in SA. is it illegal..??

what is stopping me from getting a satelite Uplink form say transcom in the uk at 8000 for 512kb/1M?
 
It's illegal (if you don't use Sentech or Telkom) but no one will stop you ATM. The costs have been discussed on the forum before and it seems quite steep though.
 
well for home use yes. but for a company? and it was illegal in KSA too. it worked fine over there. it sucks that yu have to virtually break the law in order to get affordable internet access for a company...

From what I've heard, I think you need a VANS License to Legally use a Satellite connection.
 
Vsat service providers

Hi Guys,

A friend of mine is looking to get VSAT connectivity on a farm near Hartebeespoort dam. The standard mobile connectivity in this are is totally unreliable. Who are the Vsat providers and how realiable is this way of connecting to the Internet and obviously what are the prices.

We have had some quotes from a company, Afriglobal communications. The product name is Stargaze.

Please can you advise where to go and what to do.

What would be the main usage of the Internet? If it's for online gaming, that's not going to be possible.

The main function would be for emails and updating info on the social media sites. No gaming watching of movies etc. Maybe downloads.

I hope this makes sense.
 
I have come to the conclusion that there are very few if any service providers in this bussiness. Telkom and maybe now Vodac via somebody else possibly Neotel. These providers use a large dish 1.5-3Met. The provider we are looking at is Afriglobal with there Stargaze product. They use a 74cm dish on the Ka-band system. There pricing is reasonable. If anybody is interested I can send the basic brochures and pricing.

PM me- as Maxwell or Paratus Telecom I have various consumer focussed VSAT solutions. It all depends what you want to do, how much data etc- remember the restrictions in terms of latency etc.
 
I have had the Vodacom Business for nearly 2 years now. Got it as the equipment was free. You can pay anything from R5k to R15K just for the equipment.

There are also a host of restrictions that packages have. Some allow you to use all your data in one session, some restrict you to 10% of cap in a 72hr period. TopUp data costs extra ordinary high rates. I pay R700+ p/m for 10Gb but R300+ per Gb extra.

Want uncapped you talking over R3K per month for a > 2Mbps connection. Most 2Mbps / 10Gb packages are just under R1K per month.

Satellite providers have us, who have no other options, by the short and curlies. Very limited providers, very expensive equipment, very expensive data and lots of t&c's. The higher their prices, the less likely they are to have pricing on their web site. Its a trend of South African businesses to have that "Quote" button on their sites. Almost like they are ashamed of their prices.

Microwave could be a option.
 
Where do I get costs and geographical availability?

We do have 5Ghz wifi. We have exactly one "service" provider in our area. I use 5Ghz wifi to link my house and office (500m apart) to share my internet. I can see the service provider network without the need of an extension aerial (mini dish). Our exchange, where the internet connection will originate, is limited to a max of 4Mbps.
