I have no clue what pricing on two-way satelite connections are, but I think it will be quite a bit more than R500 pm

I also don't have definitive pricing but multiply that R500/month by about 5 times and you know why most companies are stuck with Telkom.

Hi Piet2

If you go to http://www.sentech.co.za/ , then VSTAR>>VSTARInternet>>Description/Prices you will get an idea about the cost. As IC suggested you should multiply that R 500-00 with a rather substantial number :)

 Yikes!!! Shock, Horror, Bankrupt by V-Starless.

I knew it was out of my reach, but I thought it would be within the reach of some companies, I just don't see companies paying those sort of prices & yes there is a whole long list of prices, I would not call them options- unless you own a Vegas casino!!!

I am quite sure that M-Web also offered Sattelite internet. I was quite interested in it until I found out that the ping times are very high. Just checked their website and it's not there any more....

Thats the one where you use your modem for sending and sattelite for receiving and I believe it was less than R500 (excluding phone bills)....

damn!

damn!!!

I never thought i would get so much replies in a day!!!

thanks guys this is great!!

I called mweb and they have discontinued the service. They are not signing up new clients, but will support existing clients.

I am still subscribed at home and it's all you can use with a dect phone :(

luckily I have super fast GRPS at 42kbps. ;)

I am paying R325 per month for it (That is for a mweb dial-up and the sat connection.)

The pings are anywhere between 450 (when you are lucky) to 850 standard and 1150 on occasion.

I get a solid 128 kbps on weekends with 65 kbps on occasion and I get up to 350 kbps during the week (office hours)

Ok, but you still have to pay Telkom for sending via your tel line, yes? I assume you have InfinitCall & only use the wok during spend-slightly-less times?

I have InfinitCall and my telkom costs come to around R600 per month as I only really uses it on weekends. (The dect phones drop from time, so a weekend can cost R200 even with InfinitCall.)

I have not used it sice I got my 3G card.

I have a 3G card via Vodacom but use GPRS as there is no 3G coverage in my area.

Satellite Prices

There is a service called Satellite Top Up which allows fast downloads and normal slower uploads. It's cheaper than 2 way satellite. Here's some prices.

http://www.realxchange.co.za/sattelite_prices.html .

Hope that helps you. We get prices direct from a supplier whose been in the business for 15yrs. - www.platformintegration.co.za .Contention ration means you share with others, and you only get the full bandwidth if those sharing are idling and vice versa. The most popular contention ratios are 10-15.

Hope that helps.
