I just found the coverage map, and it made me change my opinion about this service. It covers the same areas covered by Telkom and the mobile operators. Back to expensive rentals now

Don't believe everything the mobile operators protest to cover, similarly Telkom unless confirmed in writing; at least with Satellite you are assured of the same service everywhere (however crap that may be)
 
Cant you use opera to speed up your browsing?

Their prices compared to other satellite operators seem excellent,R260 for 3gb isnt that bad really speaking as a 384 adsl line plus couple gigs from telkom costs around the same so for a satellite service this is very very competitive.....why so much negative response in this thread?

Even mobile broadband costs more,yes its faster but still costs more,mtn 1gb is R269.

The only part thats expensive here really is the installation and I'm sure that locks you down to them?So IMO thats the fail part....maybe they should have given the option of a 1 year contract with the equipment costs included to make it more feasible.

To be frank I've never tried, but with only a light review of their acceleration technology and also possibly that of Amazon's Silk; I think it's possible that it could offer some benefit -- Riverbed and Juniper are commercial products that I know very well and have had a lot of success with re trying to circumvent the extreme latencies inherent with satellite comms.

Would be good to test before committing to any long term contracts; surely this would be possible at their offices.

It's possible that that map is based on actual tests. I'm curious as to why the north-west is excluded. Seems a little silly to me to not test areas that have no alternative coverage considering those are going to be almost certain installations. Perhaps they don't want to travel that far? Perhaps those are based on their installation range, and not the actual coverage.
 
I'm currently using Aerosat, its been more than 2 years, it cost me R295 per month, installations was R1500. The speed is alright 4 me, i do leave torrents on at midnite and next day get 5GB of CS5 Master Collection.
 
Could be the answer to users in remote areas. But is line of sight a requirement?

What if the user sits behind a mountain?

Many rural areas don't have any broadband or even a telephone service! No cell phone coverage either. Cape Point being notorious - I want to rent a cottage there but need broadband. Plateau Rd, it is behind Simons Town's mountain.

No unreloable 3G............
And the ONLY option for large areas of rural bliss where there is NO connectivity otherwise.
It is BRILLIANT as it brings regular telephony via VoIP to much of farm areas that have NO phone services even. This is an essential service.
 
From my own point of view, I'm not convinced this will take off in SA if the sales teams can't even get their act together. I filled in the enquiry form on the Vox site more than a week ago and didn't even get an automatic acknowledgement back....

Dont forget about the 5 year contract. Which is a bummer when the service is bad or slow and you have to carry on paying for it.

5 years is ludicrous. I'd never sign anything for 5 years - I'd rather pay more.
