Satellite data & voice

Not sure where to post this question...so will try this forum.

I need a phone with data facilities for an up coming trip into desert. There is no normal GSM coverage, so this will need to be satellite. I have checked with rentamobile.co.za but quite exspensive at $2.49 per minute, rental $8 per day

Does any one know of more economical option?

Hmm can't say I know - but I do know that sat time is very expensive... I won't be surprised if those are normal rates for satellite phones.
