Hi

My grandparents moved into a house and there is a big satellite on the roof. I don't have a clue what it is and they asked me if anyone could use it or if they should sell it as scrap metal.

Does anyone here know what this is by any chance?

Thanks in advance!

So I can post pictures here from my hard drive, it only takes url's. I looked but cannot find anything in the FAQ. How do I do it?

It is a pigeon catcher MkII. You can get about R100 for it. Maybe you should contact NASA.

You do realise that a satellite flies +100,000km from earth in space, right?

It probably a broad band radio dish. If the previous owners went to all the trouble of getting it set up, you might as well use it. Poke around on the internet for South African radio clubs. With big dishes, you can usually pick up just about every long-range broadcast in the world.

Lots of fun to scroll through everything and listen to what is going on around the world :)

Leave it there. People will think their posh. What's the name of the thing and does it have its LNB still attached to it?

@OP, where are you located? I have seen a few large satellite dishes in PE & have been informed that they are C-Band devices used to receive religious broadcasts...

Uploading it to photobucket. Create a account it takes 2 minutes then just copy the url. A photobucket, image shack or whatever account is like part of the Internet kit. Almost everyone got them and a good place to store your images.

Wow! Never seen one like that before. Does it have any writing on it?

They were poking fun at you because a satellite is in space and a satellite dish is what you are referring to.

Actually almost all satellites are orbiting from a few hundred km to 30, 000 km. Most communication satellites are in LEO (Low Earth Orbit) paths so that latency isn't an issue, and the furtherest ones out (usually geostationary like GPS satellites) are usually out at around 20 000km. Any further out actually renders them less useful.

I know exactly what you meant, so i'm not trying to be pedantic... just adding extra info as it's not always common knowledge.

If it is steerable (has a motor to change direction and azimuth) then its worth about R 4500. These are C-band free to air dishes. Don't get excited about the free channels. You will get about 120, but 3/4 of them will be religion (both Christian and Muslim), most of the others will be in French or Arabic. Maybe 4 of 5 will be English language. You'll need a Freeview receiver, about R 1500.

I would try an ad in Gumtree

Isnt it for the DSTV or TOPTV thing??

I hear Telkom is going to launch Satellite Internet at about R400 - R500 per month in an attempt to "compensate" for ADSL Cable thefting.
