Then ETF's the way to go.
I was going to use the Satrix one, but they wanted copies of my ID, bank statements etc, all stamped and certified. I didn't have time to get all of those, so I opted for the FNB one, just easier. And it's really doing well. I'll probably get one from somewhere else later, but for now, I'm good.
The FNB option is less hassles and cheaper too. Hope they add more options than just the RMB Etfs in the future on the same platform

Satrix returns look good but gosh, satrix admin is in stone age. Took 12 working days to open account as somehow they kept on missing/invalidating FICA document I sent 3-4 times. I searched just now and hellopeter already has complaints about FICA documents issue with satrix. Interesting is I submitted same FICA documents to 2 banks (same week I submitted application to Satrix) and no issues whatsoever.

I do apologize for Jacking this thread... Would anyone be able to give me a step by step guide on how to setup investing in ETF's.. i see FnB is an option and Satrix and Sygnia.. i have no idea where to start and have no knowledge of what i would be doing...

1. i have R1 000 a month - of which i would prefer to setup 2 accounts? what do you guys suggest?
2. I bank with Standard Bank(not sure if that info helps).
3. I can afford to loose the 1k so a volatile option would be considered.

i know 1k is probably not enough to see any real money, but it is a start.. i would appreciate any advice

cheers

You select which provider you want, go to their website, download their form, complete the form (selecting your option/s), submit it and the other FICA documents however they want it submitted, debit order starts getting withdrawn the next month. You then can setup the website access if you want to track it online instead of waiting for the monthly stuff that gets e-mailed.

Would work you out too expensive (Standard Banks fees) to do it via online trading tools at Standard Bank for R1000pm.

Sorry for resurrecting this thread but I just need to find out something:

Satrix 40 has a TER of 0.45% and Annual Admin fee of 0.6% to 0.35%
RMB 40 has a TER of 0.2% and Annual Admin fee of 0.1%

I currently have Satrix 40 investments, but what am I missing with the RMB 40?
They are "cheaper" with the admin and TER costs, so why keep using Satrix?
Am I missing some hidden costs or other fees with RMB that Satrix doesn't have?

There's no catch other than the fact that you have to bank with FNB/RMB in order to invest in the RMB40...

It's an ETF. You can purchase it freely on the JSE as long as you have a broking account.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm already with FNB so don't have to open a account just for the EFT.

Update:

Just read this on FNB's website for Share Saver:

fnb share saver.JPG

So that adds another 40%-30% onto RMB's 10% Administration fee.

Hi Guys, I am also very novice at this so would appreciate some insight. I already bank with FNB, so reading the comments above it sounds like a better deal for me to invest in the RMB40 through FNB rather than go the satrix40 route.

Basically, I would like to put R100k away for 4-5 years...rather than let it sit in the money market account. Do you agree with this?

Thanks.
